New built pc will not boot up

new pc i built will not boot
i used an old maxtor hdd for it which two days ago worked for my other pc and if i place it back in th e other pc it still works
the pc will not boot .. it just goes to the asus mother board boot screen then it doesnt go farther
i tried plugging my HDD for my other other PC a WD one ind it worked but it took to long to reboot and they have the same hard ware like same cpu and same Mobo
now all i need to know is that if i buy a new HDD will it work?

Welcome to the Forums 🙂

On the WD, take the jumper off the pins so it's set to Single Master, if it isn't that way already.

Also, I'm not 100% clear if you're expecting an old installation of Windows to actually boot up on a new set of hardware, but your best bet is to reinstall. If your Windows license was an OEM one, then you also need to buy a new license to put Windows on the new PC 🙁

Try resetting the BIOS. Disconnect all components that are not required leaving only the Motherboard, CPU, RAM, and Video card installed and see if it boots.

If it does, hook up a CD ROM and boot from that.

I'm not 100% sure what are are getting at trying to boot of a HDD from a different working computer. Perhaps you could explain what you have tried and what you are trying to do a bit more clearly.

p.s. welcome to the forums.

ok let me be a little bitclearer
i knew it wasnt going to boot up with the old hDD because i had 2000 on it {yeh i like using 2000 on one of my pc}
i was booting up with a new windows xp pro cd on it which got for free by my friend who moved and left it behind[ he doesn't know he lost it]
the cd was enclosed in wrapper and had sticker and everything inside it so im pretty sure its genuine
the old maxtor had 2 jumpers whe i set it to single master it would recognize it about it wouldnt do anything
when i removed one of the jumpers it would do anything at all
but as i am saying i tried my WD 160GB HDD which is on a pc with same mobo and same cpu and same DVD drive
and ity booted up for liek after an hour
512 ram on it also
1024 on my old one
anyway my new hdd comes tomorrow but please if there is anyway to fix that tell me so i can still use my old maxtor 40GB and if the new HDD doesnt even work then im in deep trouble [ not that deep]
but im pretty sure all the components work maybe its the mobo?
is it like half working or something?

So it sounds like it is posting based on your last post (since you say the drive is recognized when set to single master). Can you get into your bios? Is your cd drive listed in your boot sequence? Do you get a message about not finding a boot drive or does it just hang?

yes man i can get into bios
i tried all the booting sequences with the windows cd inside
its not that i am a noob
the only way that i could use winodws on that was using my other HDD from my other workstationc pc which has same mobo and same cpu
