DVD-ROM? I'm sure your friend may want to burn some cds. If your friend are interesting to burn a cds, then get NEC ND-3540 or BENQ DW1640

Couple of comments:

  1. I own that same DVD Drive, it is a Piece of Sh*t. My Plextor is much better.
  2. Do not use Arctic Silver with AMD Processors, it will void your warrenty. USE Shin-Etsu (Sold By Coolermaster) or Honeywell PCM45 (Good Stuff).
  3. That Case is ugly, but that is subjective. It is based on the old ANTEC/Cheiftec/Chemming frame and design. It is not the best thermal performer. It also comes with a power supply, which leads me in to my next comment.
  4. Fortron is a nice PSU, but PC Power and Cooling is much better; a Turbo Cool or Silencer is probably out of reach for you just judging from the components you have chosen. Sparkle PSU's are much better made for about the same price Get a Sparkle PSU. If you are on a budget then skip this since the case you want already comes with a 500watt PSU.

Save some cash and look at an Antec 1088 Case, it comes with an Enthusiast True Power 480watt PSU.
  5. MSI is ok, their marketing sometimes gets in the way of their engineering. This leads to features that do not live up to expectations and many MSI boards have some RAM Compatability ISSUES. ASUS provides the best memory support and compatability.

  6. Memory- Venice Core supports DDR500, why are you choosing DDR400? Also Crucial is much higher quality stuff. I have seen Crucial Ballisitix DDR 500 for $120 per gigabyte ($130/GB now).

As long as the video card is from EVGA, you cannot go wrong :)

the X700 is not a bad card for light gaming..

I sold my X700 Pro, 256mb card a couple of weeks ago for $100... so the "for sale" forums could be an option, if you are looking for a rig on a budget.. unless the rigs owner absolutely wants new parts..

PQI ram is a good choice in my opinion..
I run four of those same sticks on my Abit AN8-SLI with no issues.

I say get a burner.. you never know when the user will want to burn a disc... they are not much more than a plain rom drive now days..
