I havent built a custom box (for myself) in over 5 years but i decided to go for it in the next few weeks
This is what i am considering, please tell me if i am on the right track

DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (Venice)
1 GB PC-3200 OCZ Value VX
ZALMAN CNPS7000B
NEC ND-3520A
HITACHI 80GB Serial ATA II * 2 ( boot)
HITACHI 400GB * 3 (storage)
XFX Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 PCI-Express x16 Video Card

Having trouble with the PS options, I dont plan to overclock from the start but would like to know that if i get the Itch i can stratch it...
Antec TX1088AMG case has a True Power 2 480watt ps but it only has 18amps and from what i have read you want over 22. THis true?

Any recomendations on PS ? Also are the Lian-Li cases worth the money... they seem be quite expensive but the layout seems tempting....

Nice. I agree that you'll want more. The Lian Li cases are of course worth the money, they're very nice cases. I'd suggest an Antec 550W EPS12V PSU.

Sounds pretty good to me. I don't have any real PSU recommendations other than to say that my 400W Antec has served me well for almost two years now.

One thing I might suggest is to go for a 6800GT instead of a 6600GT, since you're building a pretty high-end system there (unless you have a relatively low-resolution monitor).

Or for something in between, an X800XL.

Everything looks good except the video card. I take it you are not really into gaming. For a good case look at the thermaltake tsunami dream. For a PSU I would say the PC Power Cooling is the best, but they are very expensive. Antec Neopower 480 is also a very good PSU.

The TruePower II series have dual +12V rails. So if it is quoted as having +12v1 as 18A and +12v2 as 18A, it will give a total of 36A, which is a heap of power.

Also, you might wanna throw in a Pioneer DVR-109 DVD burner. As far as I know, they do the fastest Dual Layer burning of any consumer level DVD burner, at (8x), and have a normal burn speed of (16x). They can also burn D/L DVD-R discs, unlike some DVD burners which can only burn DVD+R as D/L.

Even better. Not a whole lot more $$$ than the 6600GT, but a pretty significant performance jump from what I remember.

Wow thanks for the quick feedback.

I have a Dell 2405 running @ 1920x 1200

I game once every couple weeks when i have a chance. Mostly ET but maybe HL2 if i ever get the time. I have a 9600Pro now and it runs ET ok but not great... I figured the 6600GT would be a huge leap from what i have now and be sufficient to do anything for the next year. Then when i wanted to upgrade in say 1 year i could pick up a 2nd 6600GT and run it in SLI mode. Not Good idea?

yes, just double checked this and you are correct 18amps on each of the 2 rails but lists Max @ 33

Also i have been reading about lowering the timings for increased performance.. Anyone got any good sites they reccomend to give me a start on how to do this without toasting my ram?

On the SLI... you'd have to get a motherboard that supports SLI now... as well as get a better powersupply most likely.

That will add anywhere between $50 to $75 to the price. For that much, SLI becomes a much more costly solution. Also 6600gts don't really perform that well in SLI when compared to a single faster card like a 6800gt or ultra.

I generally think SLI on 6600gts is a bad idea and SLI with 6800gts is only a good idea if you have a really big budget.

I was under the impression that the motherboard i had selected could perform in SLI mode with a BIOS flash and some driver updates. This not the case ?

Is the ZALMAN HSF i have listed going to be quiet? I started thinking last night that i really dont want a jet engine sound.
