hello everyone. im waiting for my new motherboard and case to get here from newegg tommorow and could really use a walkthru if anyone can find an easy to follow color walkthru. basically im gonna be putting the new motherbaord into the new case and transfering my old parts to the new. the only part of pc building i have never done is placeing the motherboard in the case so when it comes to the cards and other things like the ram etc ill be fine, but this case has some lables that differ from the lables in the manual for my board i downloaded so any help would be great.

the new case is a raidmax scorpio 668 black with the 420 raidmax PS
the new motherbaord is an asus p4c800-e deluxe
i also purchased some artic silver 5 (also something ive never done is the thermal greace)

currently i have

soyo p4x400 dragon ultra platinum
2.4 GH p4 with 533 FSB ( stock heatsink and fan since i couldnt find good replacements)
1 stick kingston value ddr333 512 2.6v
1 stick kingston value ddr400 512 2.5v
PNY 5900 SE 128mb video card
1 80 gig HD
1 40 gig HD
lg burner
16x dvd

basically im needing a walkthru that shows how to set the motherboard and shows where the connectors from the case goes. and possibly a guide for doing the thermal greace stuff. once ive got that ill be set for the rest like formatting etc. thanks in advance.

Maybe this will be close: http://www.omnicast.net/~tmcfa...uides/build/index.html Thanks to Vegetto, there's a page showing Pentium4 installation & thermal grease application.

The Resources page near the end has some advice about keeping the system from catching worms off of your broadband connection. If you have the bandwidth to download Service Pack 2 for WinXP (I'm assuming you're going to use WinXP), then that would be a good resource to have available in advance.

Also, get your stuff installed in this order:
 • Windows Service packs first
 • Motherboard drivers second (Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility for the Asus you're getting)
 • Video drivers third (yes, this may mean suffering with a nasty-lookin' display for a while)
If you don't mind me saying this... dude, get a really good power supply, don't ride your nice system on a Raidmax :( Enermax, Antec, PC Power & Cooling, Fortron... sure. Also, be aware that your existing Windows installation is going to freak out if you swap mobos from under it... I recommend backing up your data and planning on a fresh installation.

Hope that helps :)

i appreciate the link. im gonna have fun with my front mounted stuff since it uses mostly loose pin connects :-(. as far as the powersupply i have no choice right now as i just dumped almost a whole check to get the case/motherboard/greace and have it overnight shipped. but on my next check i am thinking about either getting an antec true blue 480 or a true 550. im also thinking seriously about replaceing all of the case fans with blue neon ones that use the motherboad power instead of the molex connects to keep the clutter down (but how many connects are on the motherboard?) as far as winxp im prepareing myself right now for the headaches of formatting and reinstalling :-( ive got 20 gigs of music,12 gigs of iso backups, and another 20 gigs of movies ive ripped from dvds so im kinda wondering what im gonna do about that since i only have a spare 40 gig to drop them to and i dont have a dvd burner to help me backup with :-( i do have another question though that may sound silly but......is it safe to string like 3 fans together so that i can keep from running out of molex connectors or is that a bad idea? with my thinking id be able to string like 4 fans together and hide the cables a bit easier but im a little scared that it may pull too much power by doing that is that possible or am i just being paranoid? still looking thru this and im starting to get the idea on the case connects now but im still a little confused on the greace.. basically i just get some like rubbing alcohol and run the heatsink down and then just use a few drops of the artic silver 5 and spread it out enough to cover the center of the heatsink? OMG im just noticeing how much im asking at once im sorry lol

You can string the fans together, no problem unless they're ultra-high-output ones (not likely anyone's going to run four Tornados, though).

The motherboard has... lessee here... three 3-pin fan headers. One's going to be needed by the CPU's heatsink/fan unit. So that leaves two. If you're using normal, sane 80mm LED-lighted fans (as opposed to extra-high-output fans), I think you can safely double up two fans on each 3-pin header using a three-pin Y-splitter (SVC.com is a good place to get those cheap).

With the thermal grease, the bottom line is you want a thin layer of it inbetween the CPU and the heatsink. If it were me, I'd put a sandwich baggie over my finger, rub a bit of thermal grease into the base of the heatsink to fill up its little pores and irregularities, then blob a little onto the CPU itself and begin going dab-dab-dab and spreading it with my baggie-covered finger until the whole CPU had a paper-thin coat. Latch it together, and call it done :)

Actually on P4s and Athlon 64s Arctic Silver recommends putting a small dab (and I mean small) on the middle of the CPU and letting the heatsink spread the compound by pressure.
