Question is simple.. with my new build, should I get Vista Ultimate 64bit or stick with Xp Pro?

Here is the build:

Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200.11 --- $120

CORSAIR 520HX Power Supply -- $110

mushkin 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) -- $113

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz 4M shared L2 Cache -- $190

Mobo: Undecided.

I have a copy of Xp PRO already.

Obviously if I stick with Xp, I will not need 4GB of Ram.

Thoughts?

You're building a new system why go with an older OS? I'm building a new system soon and there was no question as to what Windows OS would go on it along with Ubuntu. Like it or not Vista is the future as is 64 bit......JMO:D

EDIT: Oh and BTW, I also have retail copies of XP laying around unused as I do copies of Win2K, 98,95........;)

If you can afford the extra $$$, another vote for Vista x64, it'll fly on that rig. You can dual boot with XP if you want at first just in case. Do you have a DX10 videocard?

XP Pro. With SP3 around the corner, it will be better than ever.

There's no hurry to get Vista, you can upgrade at any time. Let the paying beta testers continue to test it for the rest of us, there are still thousands of Vista bugs to fix. Maybe it'll be worth using sometime in 2009.

I'm not being a smart ass. You hear from Vista users that "they never had any problem with Vista," but they say that because misery loves company and they want more support for their OS. The reality is that Vista is indeed full of bugs and MS is still trying to decide what security policies to use with it. Vista really is a giant testing ground--for Windows Server and Windows 7.

Here's the kind of fun you can expect with Vista:

Or just look at any Vista support forum if you think all the "anti-Vista" sentiment is just some kind of teenage internet fad going around or something, as Vista apologists have claimed.

Meh. I don't put a lot of stock in that stuff because for every person who's ranting on Vista there are dozens of the silent majority using it without any problems.

FWIW I would stick with XP simply because you already own it. You can always upgrade later.

Because that's where most active development is happening, you'll likely be using it eventually so why not start now?

Neither will Vista.

Not the 32-bit releases, no. But if he's going to Vista he might as well make both leaps at once and get a 64-bit release and save himself the headache of another migration a year or so down the road.

Yeah and driver and compatiblity wise, XP64 pales in comparison to Vista.

Yeah, I tried XP64 twice and it was a waste of time.

I'm struggling with the same issue - I'm building an e6750-based system very soon and am leaning towards installing Vista on it. But I'm also thinking about cutting straight over to 64-bit Vista. My biggest concern is app support - I run a lot of graphics and page layout and need to preserve my workflow. So I might stick with 32-bit.

Unless the app requires a driver for which there isn't a 64-bit release it'll work fine on the Vista64 if it runs on Vista32.

I'd say it because I am using Vista x64 and it runs very well.

Exactly. Even if you read a hundred views of people experiancing problems that isn't even a thousandth of the people using the software trouble free. I haven't read to many thread titled "Vista works perfectly, and I have no problems with it", because no one post them. A lot more problems are between the chair and the keyboard than on the hard drive.

Vista x64 will run a lot of 32 bit programs,Firefox and most 32 bit web software(flash, java etc) etc all run fine so Internet in general should not be a problem, gaming wise well DX10 and DX10.1 down the road not to meantion DX11 at even later date.
Service Pack 1 too is not far off for Vista.
I have not encountered any major problems so far with 32 bit games(bear in mind you can't run any 16 bit software or 16 bit games in Vista x64 due to no 16 bit legacy support),I also have all available 64 bit drivers.
Internet has been solid for me and gaming in general as well.

Some of my games listed below.

BG+Exp pack
BG2+Exp pack
WoW+Exp pack
Vanguard
KOTOR
KOTOR2
NWN2+MoB exp pack.
Vanguard
Mythos(Beta online game)
Space Rangers 2(without Starforce copy protection)
The Witcher
Jedi Academy
Jedi Outcast
Morrowind+ all Exp packs
Oblivion + Exp packs
Starcraft+ Brood Wars.
Silverfall
Jade Empire
Steam games(CS,DoD,TFC etc..)
Two Worlds
Avencast
Jericho
Prey
UT2004
Stalker
UFO-Extraterrestrials
UFO-Afterlight
Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale 2
Bioshock
Deus Ex
Deus Ex2
DarknLight
Archlord
Dungeon Runners
9 Dragons
Anarchy Online
SWG
LOTRO
Xcom -Enforcer
Might&Magic 8
UFO-Alien Invasion
SpaceForce Rogue Universe
Painkiller-Overdose

Few more that I missed out but you can see gaming compatibility is very good in general.
As always check 64 bit driver support for your hardware.

So basically he can become a part of the BETA testing team that send in reports when Vista stops working with everything. Great idea!

The beta program is over and Vista was released in Jan of 2007. You should start using facts when you frame your arguments.

I'm going to go ahead and pick-up Vista and give it a shot. I picked up 4gb of RAM as well.
