Hi as embarrassing as this is I am asking assistance in determining what I broke on my build. Building a new server to replace an existing home server. I've done a number of builds in the past never with any issues, but I'm no expert. This is a first build i have done with m-itx mb and sfx psu.

MB - ASROCK z97e itx (and) Gigabyte H97N itx
PSU - Silverstone 600W SXF
I5 - 4570S CPU
G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133
Silverstone DS380 case

The mistake i made was connecting the PCIE 8 pin connector from the PSU to the 8 pin CPU connector on the mb - When i discovered i did that I was surprised because the connector on the mb went in easy. Dumb ass mistake I know. I fixed the cable mistake but no post.

It wont post now in fact i cant even get any fans to work (cpu or case)? I've tested the psu and it seems fine. I replaced the MB (from ASROCK to the Gigabyte). Same issue.

My question - is it the CPU? Its the only thing i can think of now. Even if is the CPU wouldnt the case fans spin? Since the CPU's are cheap I dont want to buy another if there is something i should do first.

I'm going to take it all apart (again) and use my (just got it) top deck tech station (from highspeedpc) and build it outside of the case.

Very frustrating (and expensive) mistake, live and learn, and right now just want to get it fixed whatever it is.

Appreciate any assistance

thanks

I assume you turned the power on and tried to energize the first mobo thus sending a short to the cpu.

an 8 pin pcie is

pppn
nnnn or

nnnn
pppn

an eight pin cpu cable is

pppp
nnnn

or

nnnn
pppp

I killed a gpu card using a cpu cable as the gpu did not have polarity protectiion

I have to think you killed the cpu as it was not polarity protected

Try a known good PS.

+1.. You can look at the pin out below. No power sent to CPU, he sent 12volts to ground & likely fried the PS. It may power lights, fans, etc, but prolly not gonna power that system up again..
