new build won't boot

I just got around to putting together a new system:

new:
Phenom II X2 555BE
MSI 870A-G54
Sapphire 5770
4GB (2x2) OCZ ddr3 RAM

old/from previous computer:
Ultra 500W PSU
case/monitor/etc

The problem is that the mobo won't light up. I just took the psu out from my previous build, and I'm positive it works. I removed one stick of RAM and the graphics card to isolate it even more, but it seems that the mobo is the problem? I was really hoping that this isnt the cas, because the mobo was an open box from newegg. Perhaps replacing the psu will help? Anyone have suggestions?

is the mobo properly seated on the stand-off screws? try pulling the mobo out entirely and hooking up everything outside the chasis to see if you can boot. if nothing then i would say the mobo is dead

Ya, that's probably the best you can do, but make sure that all you connections are correct especially the little two pin connectors. Also, buy a PSU from Frys & if the MB dosnt work then Frys will take the PSU back.

The MB is so important because everything plugs into it so I never skimp on a MB (try always to buy a 5 star rated board). Also, I have the MB assembled professionally (eg, CPU & memory mounted and board tested) then just handed to me. (After all it is the computer.) Besides knowing in advance that it works, there is a warranty & one responsible individual to turn to in case of an early failure.
