I'm helping a friend upgrade his ancient socket A machine. I think he can reuse the powersupply as it is 450 watts. We are trying to keep this as cheap as possible (<$300, maybe $400 if it's worth it) and are looking at possible builds.
What do you think of the following?
Athlon II X2 2.8GHz - $68
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 - $85
Powercolor Radeon 4850 512MB - $115
Found these on the NCIX sale page here.
Might be able to get a couple gigs of DDR2 for $30, but if it's available online (or 4GB) for a comparable price then that might work as well.
Speaking of this, I had no idea that they made AM3 with DDR2 boards. Seems like a sweet deal to me as DDR2 is so cheap at this point.
(I'm in Canada btw. Generally buy from NCIX or Newegg Canada.)
EDIT: Another option is this intel bundle. They have AMD bundles as well but they appear to be on back order
EDIT2: This will be a moderate gaming PC. Mainly Source stuff but it would be nice to be able to play games into the future as well, hence the 4850. I was thinking that he could easily upgrade to a quadcore in the future as well.
EDIT3: Is this anything to be concerned about, or has this been fixed with newer BIOS'? I'm also a bit worried about the chipset and their drivers as I've heard (and read) that AMD has AHCI and USB troubles. Any grounds to this?
