Just finished putting together a new build with a 4690k. I have 3 monitors, 2 connected with DVI to HDMI connectors and one HDMI with a minidisplay port adapter.

After putting new build together, I had to plug the HDMI into the onboard port; no image through the mini displayport, although plugging it in does give a sound as the computer recognizes it. Did the adapter fail, then?

Edit: full system is now:

Thermaltake SMART 850w
4690k
hyper 212 EVO
Windows 8
2 4GB sticks of Mushkin enhanced 996995
XFX HD 7970

The HD 7970 supports 3 monitors if you use at least one active displayport adapter.

The HDMI-minidisplayport adapter you mention would appear to be a passive adapter, not an active adapter.

You will likely have to replace your current adapter with an active one, or you might be able to find one that could be used in conjunction, but I doubt it, as most active adapters provide the desired converted output for the monitor (DVI etc.) and I haven't seen any active adapters that output as minidisplayport.

How did it work before? That's the part I'm not understanding, if it's not the right adapter.

Apologies if I missed saying that I had the exact setup on a 3570 build, the adapter worked in it. Same GPU now -
