Ok Im looking to build a new computer in the next 2 months. My current build is:
Asus P5N-D
4gb Kingston DDR2 800
Intel E8400 @ 3.0ghz
XFX 8800 GT (g92) 512mb
WD 640gb and 1tb
550w psu
Samsung SyncMaster 2433BW moniter

Im thinking about building a i7 rig but im not sure if i should, I do know I want to go quad core. Id like to update my video card. Theres just too many options out there now a days to be able to truly get a good idea as to whats the best return of investment. I do game alot but im not a FPS junkie. Eve online, and RTSs like Company of Heroes and Dawn of War II make up the games I play. I do watch videos and I have thought about maybe getting a 32" LCD 1080p tv to replace my moniter. I was a longtime AMD user, till the wolfdales came out and you could get higher clocks using less power. Currently the other computer in the house is a Celeron 420. Id like to reuse as much of the current PC to become my HTPC but i know i cant use the 8800 so that will go to my daughter. So any suggestions that you might have would be really welcomed.

My new main rig im looking to go quad with a better video card than my current 8800, and with my htpc id really like something that could use that would be good for blu-ray playback and do audio through the hdmi but if not thats ok. Also the HTPC will work as the home file server.

for your main rig, if you want to go with the i7 go with the 920. u didnt give a budget, but i just assume your not made of money, but i could b wrong. you can salvage those hd's for the new build as well. if your psu is still good.. then i would say use that as well, same with whatever case u have. Really all you will need is that i7 with a good x58 mobo, ddr3 ram. the gpu is what it really boils to down i would say. You can get a good one now and upgrade every 6 months to a year if u wanted. if thats so then the hd 4890 is selling liek hotcakes right now.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813188039 This is a good x58, but it has a decent amount of RMa complaints.

you really just have to shop around on newegg or other similar sites to find the best deals.

Sorry well the budget isnt really limited, but Im not the kind of person to pay for top of the line. When I built my current rig, I went for upper midrange, besides the video card 8800 GT was close to the top at the time. Id say 1500 is my max, but If i dont have to spend it then im ok with that as well. So far here are my thoughts on the i7 system:

Memory:http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231225

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813186171

For the Video card im either thinking a ATI 4870 or Nvidia 260

Who knows this may change between now and End of July when I finally decide to Buy.
