Hi, this is my first post here. Please excuse me if I'm too wordy. I'm upgrading from an ancient system (6 year old Core I7-930) to a new build.
PC will be used for Gaming, photo editing with lightroom and photoshop, eventual VR (1 year window), and general family home use.
I have no set budget, there is $1500 set aside, but I am buying parts here and there and am not too worried about going over $500-1000. So far I have bought a full tower Thor V2 Rosewill case and Rosewill bronze 850W PSU.
I prefer Intel and Nvidia. I plan on getting a GTX 1080 card (Looking at Asus ROG Strix and MSI)
I currently have an ASUS 1080p monitor which I will be upgrading eventually to either a 1440 or 4K.
As far as carried over parts, the only thing I would be likely to carry over is one or more of my WD 7200 Rpm HDDs.
Here is my biggest dilemma and the research has my head swimming.
I can't decide on the CPU and Motherboard.
Originally I planned on going with Skylake and probably overclocking at least the RAM if not both RAM and CPU.
Now, the Broadwell-E dropped last night. I don't need all the cores, and don't want to spend $1700 on a 6900. But the "low end" CPU is in consideration.
I also don't know if I should wait for Kaby Lake which will come out in the next couple of months. (Some of the features on the rumored Z200 sound useful)
And for the Icing on the cake, there are numerous articles about next year's release of Skylake-E and or Cannon Lake.
Once I build this system, I would rather not have to replace the MB and CPU for at least 3 or 4 years.
MY final question is, if I do carry over my hard drive would the current Windows 10 OS work or will I need to purchase a new license?
Thanks in advance to all.
