My old computer finally died. (A7n8x Deluxe, Athlon XP 2400, ATI HD3850AGP)

I am looking to build a new gaming PC (looking for Higher end of Mid-range). I would like to be able to play today's newest games at MAX, but still allow games in 4-5 years to still be playable. It will also host my family's pics, music, movies, etc...

I would like to keep it around $1000, and would prefer a quadcore.

I was looking around at modoheo's sticky and decided on:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor
ASUS P5Q LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
HIS Hightech H487F512P Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
Two-Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB (run in RAID 1)
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm

I will be using Windows XP but might swap for vista. (or even do dual boot)

I haven't decided on a DVD drive, but it will be SATA, with a DL DVD burner.

From my old PC:
BFG 650W powersupply
Case. Not sure of model/company will have to look when I get home.

I was looking into having this build around Janurary although I'm a little hesitant with the Phenom II and Nehalem comming out. Are they comming out anytime soon? (3-4 months?)

If your not going to build till Jan then wait till then to find the parts you want. Allot will change between now and then. Also if you want to play todays games with all high settings then your looking to build a high end gaming system not a high level mid range system. It also worth noting that allot can happen in 5 years. You may be lucky if a high end system today is able to play any of the new games 2 years from now.

I wouldn't go that far. A high end system today will play games in two years without a doubt. My P4 rig with a 7600GS could still play a lot of the stuff that is coming out now. It played FEAR quite well. Were the graphics settings maxed out? No, but the games were perfectly playable.

mpilchfamily: I agree with DSF. My old computer played the newer games. Wasn't anything fancy, but they were bearable. Plus it's not like there wouldn't be any room to upgrade.

I was reading around some more, apparently Nehalem came out. I think I am going to wait a bit. We should see the prices fall soon. (crosses fingers)
