New build problems

Alright, so, I've been fighting this new build for two days now. Basically, I was having shorting problems and got it all taken care of. The problem now is that I get no beeps or post at all. I'm thinking that it's either the CPU or mobo, but am hoping that I've missed something simple.

I've tested the RAM and the PSU. Those seem to be doing just fine. All fans whirl up and the mobo LED is on. Also, I've tried a different GPU with the same result. Also, the monitor gets no signal. Any ideas?

Specs:

ASUS P5Q Pro main board
8gb G.Skill DDR2 800 RAM
Powercolor Radeon HD4870 gpu
Western Digital Black Caviar 500gb HDD
Rosewill 600 watt PSU

Anyone have any clues or am I outta luck and need to start RMAing stuff back to NewEgg? Thanks.

Try and re-seating the RAM, CPU and checking the plugs that goes from the PSU to the MOBO.

Also make sure that the 12V+ plug is plugged in. Try and troubleshoot, if it's plugged in. Unplug it and turn on the computer, if it beeps and there is still no post it could be you're video card.

Do everything step by step.

Appreciated. I've actually been doing most of that all day. Also, a second video card got the same error. It's like the machine doesn't want to boot. That's what makes me think mobo or CPU. But yeah. :

One thing I haven't tried is re-seating the processor. When I installed it, it slipped right into place, but it might be worth checking.

Not really sure why this is happening. Did you check if you plugged in the 4 pin to the video card? (The one you plug in to the video card from the PSU to the GPU).

I'm also thinking that it might be that it's not getting power from the motherboard to the video card. Make sure that every single thing is plugged in.

Are you doing this troubleshooting out-of-case? How are you certain that your shorting issue is resolved? Are you using an aftermarket cooler that makes contact with your mobo via a backplate?

Reset the CMOS, remove the video card and RAM, try to boot, and see if you get some beeps. Also, what is the spec'd voltage for your RAM? Just an idea, but the default Vdimm in BIOS on your mobo might not be sufficient to POST. If you tested the memory in another board and it worked, that mobo might just be less touchy or was using a higher Vdimm that would allow boot.

I had some 2.0-2.1V G.Skill that booted at 1.8V with auto-reduced timings when I first built my system, but a year and a half later it will not. I got similar symptoms as you when troubleshooting. If I ever reset my board to defaults, I need to use 1.8V RAM to get into BIOS and up the Vdimm so I can use my old sticks.

Pull stuff out of the case. Hook up essentials (cpu/hsf, 1 stick ram, gpu) only. Plug power into the necessary spots (24-pin and 4/8-pin plug onto motherboard, 6/8-pin plug into GPU). With PSU unplugged, clear the BIOS. Now plug in PSU and short the motherboard to switch on the system (connect the two Power jumpers on the front panel header, I always use a jumper from an old CDROM or something similar).

Let us know what happens.
