Recently got a P D 820, Asus P5LD2 Deluxe, eVGA 7800GT, 2x512 OCZ. Everything is fine, but the mobo won't detect my hard drives. I went into the BIOS and it doesn't detect anything in the way of HDs. I know it is connected in the right spot, so I unplugged all HDs but the one I want to put the OS onto. Computer starts to boot from the WIN XP cd and then all of a sudden I get a bsod. It says something about harddrives and such. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I did unhook all but one of the HDs. The jumpers are correct. While XP is looking through my devices it just stops and gives me an error about checking for viruses and making sure any newly installed HDs are configured and terminated correctly???

I would suggest booting up with the WD diagnostics, either on a floppy or cd, and running it. Sounds like a bad piece of hardware if you are getting BSOD's.

Normally I would try that...but considering that less than an hour ago my old rig was running just fine on this HD...I don't think that is the case. Especially since the HD didn't even move...it stayed in the exact same spot in my case.

Try plugging it in on a different PC, if it works on the other PC. It might be a problem with the mobo. Try running SpinRite on it also

HDs can die anytime - anywhere. It doesnt have to be exposed to physical movement/damage to die.

I don't have access right now to another PC. Is it possible for just the Main IDE input to be bad...when everything else on the mobo is fine?

Just guessing, but are you trying to hook that one up to the SATA II ports? Put it in a SATA I port.

I can hear the HD starting up (spinning). I tried my 200GB Seagate as well...and the same thing happens.

Here is the exact error code:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart you computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C7E63C, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Make sure you have your hard drive in the Blue ide slot. That is your problem. Put your hard drive as slave and your cdrom as master and then it should work. A lot of the newegg reviews state that you cant boot a hard drive off of the red ide connections. Nothing is wrong with the board.

I would really reccomend a sata drive, new boards hate old IDE drives unless you are already in windows and install the driver for the other controller (the red ide connectors)
Quote from newegg review:

Had a lot of difficulty reinstalling windows with this board. Make sure when you put this thing together that you first connect your hard drive and cd on the same IDE cable. HD master, CD slave. Plug into blue ATA slot. This is the only active ATA slot. This will allow you to install Windows and then activate the other ATA slots using the provided Asus support CD. You can then separate your HD and CD appropriately.

your welcome, My dad has the p5dw2 premium and I read a lot of issues with the ide connections. Your board is almost the same so I thought that would work. As soon as you have windows installed and you install the driver for the red ide drives you should be able to move the drive to the red connections. Thats what I did on my dads.
