New Build, problems with SATA setup

I have tried everything I can think of, and I cannot get this to work.

Am I doing something in the wrong order?

mobo is gigabyte g33m-ds2R with 2 GB RAM

150 GB Raptor for XP Pro and applications

3 WD 500 GB HD's to be set up in RAID 5. This is to be a small office server.

I originally installed windows and did not realize I had to F6 for the SATA RAID drivers.


I reinstalled, and installed the intel SATA drivers. Then continued with reinstall of windows as Repair install. The drivers are the latest ones from intel website. Gigabyte drivers did not work.

I don't have the RAID drives hooked up yet. My thought was to install the OS on the Raptor drive, then add the RAID array.

After setting BIOS for RAID, ctrl -i does not work. The BIOS sees the HD, but windows will not load. If RAID or AHCI is chosen, the BIOS loads some kind of SATA software(it goes by quickly), then XP splash screen appears (dimmed), and then the "windows did not load properly" screen appears.

If I switch back to IDE mode, everything loads fine.

Is there anyway to get this to work?

What I would do:

1) with the motherboard in IDE mode, start WinXP Setup from the WinXP CD-ROM. You're only going partway this time around.

2) get to where it shows the partitions on the boot drive, delete all the partitions, then stop. Exit from Windows Setup by hitting F3 twice.

3) On the reboot, go into the BIOS and set the controller to the mode you need it in, and make sure your floppy contains the right drivers for that mode.

4) Now begin Windows Setup a second time, doing the F6 thing, giving it the floppy when it asks for it, and keep going. Make a partition, do a quick format of it, and continue installing Windows. It should copy files to the HDD, reboot for phase 2, and reboot again for the final phase of Setup. Don't EVER change the SATA controller mode once you're done.


Bigger picture: 1TB of storage for a small office?! 😕 I served about 100 employees with a 73GB RAID5 (SCSI). It's going to take one heck of a tape drive to provide real backup for that much data (RAID is not backup).
