New Build Problems Asus P8Z68-V

I helped my nephew build a new PC using a Asus P8Z68-V that was purchased January 2012 @ newegg. It doesn't say GEN3 on the box like the current newegg pic shows if that matters.

Built the PC with a i7 2700, hyper 212, 8GB of ram (on the supported ram list for the board), seagate 1TB hard drive, and an xfx 6870 all put together in a full tower Antec case with a 850w Corsair PSU.

It all went together smooth and fired right up..Ran great for the first couple days but now it wont boot into windows. (Windows 7 64bit).
It gets to the windows loading screen and then after a long pause it gives these errors.
asus routine controller has stopped working.
u3checker MFC application has stopped working.
windows explorer has stopped working.
InPageError c0000185.
Also tried booting into safe mode with no luck.

checked the BIOS to make sure all the setting for the CPU and RAM were right and they were. checked temps and they are ok at 38c.

hardware wise did all the usual stuff like trying with just 1 stick of ram, tried different SATA ports for the hard drive etc.

what else should I try?
does it sound like the motherboard is bad and needs rma'd or possibly the hard drive?

He lives a few miles from me so I don't have my hands on the PC right now, but tomorrow I planned on running memtest and running some hard drive utilities to see if I could figure anything out.

thanks for any thoughts or suggestions

Might be a long shot but try pulling the cmos battery and holding the case power button for 30 seconds before replacing it. If that doesn't work, have you tried doing a windows repair with the OS disc

thanks for your reply.

I will try clearing the CMOS.
I don't think a repair install would work. No software has been installed/or uninstalled prior to the problems starting.

I am pretty sure it is a hardware issue, just not sure what hardware and what the best way to troubleshoot it is.

thanks

I have the very same motherboard. I had problems with my SATA ports not being recognized till I did a CMOS clear using the jumper. Also you would want to make sure that you are using the latest BIOS (I'm using the 0801 version, which was removed from the ASUS downloads after I installed it!).

hard to say, but when i first read this, my first thought was a bad hard-drive. do you have a spare SATA you could throw in there and try?

The reason I suggested it was that a little googling of the error code seemed to point towards a system file being damaged. You wouldn't have had to install/uninstall anything.
