and I am reusing an old Dell SeaGate 160GB also (w/ Dell's Windows XP 32 and all my personal info on it) in Sata 2-1 and the New 500GB in Sata 2.0.I wanted to RAID these 2 Drives (are the placements right and does the PSU connection matter), but I still have personal files (docs/Pics) on the Dell 160GB HD I wanted to extract first. I also have a USB external HD. I wanted to access the old drive and copy my files onto the USB External HD, but I get BSOD everytime I try to load up. Is this because the Windows XP is not able to work with the new Gigabye MB or something? Summed up, I just want to get my personal info off my old drive and into the USB external HD. I haven't messed around the Gigabyte Bios or installed the Windows Vista on the new HD yet because I really don't want to lose that info or mess up anything. Please any advice would be appreciated- my wife is gonna kill me if I lose this stuff... Thanks in advance!

are you trying to boot from the old hard drive with windows already installed on it from your old computer? That won't work. you'll need to format a new drive and install windows on that, and then plug in your old Dell drive after you have the computer running, and extract the files that way.

Great, Thanks for the answer! I'll probably just format the old drive and use as... storage unless anyone has any other ideas? Dual Boot it with Windows 7? Anybody have suggestions?

You're likely switching to a different HD controller on the new motherboard, which the operating system isn't prepared for. Especially if going from an Intel Chipset board to an AMD chipset. Thus the BSOD.

It's sometimes possible to switch HD controller drivers BEFORE removing the HD from the old system.
In Device Manager, under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller" change to: "Standard IDE controller".
Or: try Ubuntu or some other CD-bootable operating system. Use that to copy whatever data from the old
Dell hard drive to a USB thumb drive.
However: it would be easier to do a fresh install of Vista-SP1 on the new HD.
Leave the old HD unattached until you can boot from the new HD.

Thank you for the reply! Yeah, I think I'll just remove the 2nd drive for now and pull what I need from it later, and format- any suggestions for what I could use the 2nd drive for if I'm not gonna RAID- I guess back up, or should I try a dual boot with Windows 7 on it? Just curious, it's gonna be an all-around use computer (mainly gamining for me!)

A repair install will generally work. Though it is best to just format a new HD and then plug the old HD in as a secondary HD. Then just copy the data over.
