New build, problem with power to CD-rom drive

Hi, I am having probems with a computer that I just built. I built a rig with the same components about a month ago and had zero problems. The computer will post and I can get into the bios. The cd-rom drive does not show in the bios, that is because it has no power. If I remove the cd-rom drive from the case plug a power conector into it then boot the drive it has power. As long as the drive is in the case I can't get any power to it, light does not come on and eject button does not work. Seems like some sort of short to me. I have tried another drive with the same result. The whole system is new except the video card. Anyone have an idea or suggestion.

Thanks

Here is what is in the system:

ATX case with 350w power supply
Asus P4S8X-X with onboard audio
P4 2.8b
Maxtor 80gb hard drive
Kingston 512mb pc2700 ddr
Nvidia Geforce2 MX400
Lite-On 8x DVD burner

Try connecting the drive to a different power source - the one connected to the hard drive for example.

had dealt with an hp awhile back..the fumble-fingers before me had kilt one of the molex 4-pin pwr leads..ugh..

I have tried that didn't work. I have switched them all around to try all posible position, they all power the case fans fine, but as long as the drive is touching the case it does not work.

your psu is shorting to ground on the case most likely..remove the psu..isolate the psu from touching the case ..then put drive in bay..try it that way..report back ..

Is your power outlet properly grounded? Using a power source without a proper earthing is not only dangerous, you could end up frying something in the case.

A good power strip with surge protection will have indicators telling you if the power outlet is good.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys. I got my problem solved it ended up being a short in the power suppy. I took the power supply out of my computer and put it in the new one and it worked fine. Just didn't expect to have a problem with the power supply in a brand new case. I bought the case in Feb but didn't use it until yesterday. I went back to the store that I purchased it from and they did an exchange no problem. I was a little worried since it had been more than 90 days.

Thanks again
