1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Browsing, Email, Some Document Processing, Light Graphics manipulation/photo editing, and Moderate Gaming. The games I play are usually a few years old.
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
Honestly... as little as possible. Prefer to keep the price for additional components under $100 US if possible.
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
US, probably Newegg or TigerDirect
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
None
5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Current Parts I will be using:
6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
I searched for P5GD1 in the Motherboards section and for 520 in the Processors section, but didn't come up with anything worthwhile.
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
If I do overclock it will be a very very mild overclock. I've never OC'd before, but would like to get a feel for how the settings work.
8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Now
My computer took a dump on me a month or so back and I need to get a computer up and running. I was previously running a Socket A Athlon 1800+ AGP board. Most of my old parts are still functional (for now), but I needed to replace the Motherboard/CPU/RAM. I had bought the ASUS Mobo and Pentium 4 520 a few years ago for a build that never got off the ground. I sold the components to my old man for a few bucks and he never got around to building a PC with them either.
This is what I have to work with and I can't afford a different mobo and/or processor, so please don't suggest that is what I should do.
I'm looking at getting one of the two following 1GB of DDR400 RAM (512x2):
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail
Both of these are the closest that I can find by product number when I check it against the "Qualified vendors list" in the Motherboard userguide. Would anyone recommend one over the other?
I'm also going to be looking into a cheap PCI x16 video card. This card would have to be <$50US and compatible with both Windows 2000 and XP. I can't really go any higher than this. I'm not a serious gamer and I like to play games more for the play than the sparkly things. I'd be playing KOTOR1, KOTOR2, Age of Empires 3, and Empire Earth 2/3.
Is this system doable?
Was I retarded when I originally bought the mobo/cpu (late 2004 =p ) and they aren't even compatible?
Any suggestions are appreciated, even if you suggest I get something different - although your suggestion won't really be taken.
Thanks for any input you guys can provide.
Bob
