New Build of Windows Vista Released - Build 5472

New Build of Windows Vista Released

Microsoft continues to make changes to Windows Vista as the OS creeps along until its scheduled release later this year. The company today released an interim build of the OS that improves its overall performance and makes specific tweaks recommended by beta testers.

The release, build number 5472, is now available to Windows Vista Technical Beta program participants, select Technology Adoption Program (TAP) customers, and Microsoft Developer Network subscribers. About 500,000 users should receive the build, said Mike Burk, a Microsoft product manager for Windows Client.

I've heard it's improved a lot since the 5384 build. I wonder why they didn't just release a version like this to the public, instead of what we got...?

This is just an interim build so the distribution is fairly small. RC1 should be the next public build.

My initial impressions of this build are good, most of the componets appear to work correctly and seems to be fairly stable (though most of the recent builds have been after a vanilla install). Over the next couple of days I'll start adding software to it, this is where I usually start having the bigger problems.

Also I'm pleased to say I got my Xbox 360 setup as a media center extender!

RE: MSDN Subscribers. I'm logged in right now and don't see any 5472 build. All I see is Beta2. 😕

Then when RC1 comes out, people will say, why didn't they release THIS build instead of beta2.

If you keep pushing back the build you want to release to the public, you'll never get any valuable feedback from the public. A lot of the reason why this build is better than beta2 is because of the feedback coming in from beta2 users.

The idea of a beta program is not to release a nice smoothly operating chunk of code. Participating in a beta program means dealing with the frustrations of using an unfinished product and reporting on issues in order to make the final product great.

You also have to understand that the time difference between the 5384 build and the 5456 (which I know, we're not talking about that one) was just a couple weeks. Apparently the fixes in it would have been good enough to wait a couple weeks instead of releasing the beta 2 out right away.

The time between 5384 and 5456 was about as long as was between 5456 and 5472. It just took an extra couple of weeks between release and when the public got to take a look at 5384.

Us techbeta folks have been getting builds every 3-4 weeks for several months now.

Time between releases, yes. But 5456 was from the RC branch which was being worked on simultaneously with the beta2 branch. So is a lot more than 2 weeks worth of work in 5456 compared to beta2.

Sooo, what are the changes in the newest build? Is is worth gettting? Cause, I'm quite happy with 5456 right now..
It's the next interim build on the road to RC1. Obviously as an official beta tester you're going to want to install the latest build so you can test for bug regression, etc.

Any other MSDN subscribers not see the new build there?

I just checked and can't find it on the subscriber downloads. I'm not sure where we are supposed to find it.

Its on MSDN now (called July CTP)

Was last night at midnight UK time... so I have 32 and 64 bits downloaded)

Still can't imagine that Vista will be done by November. There are to many issues still even in this late stage. I fear Microsoft will simply release it and then try to release patches to fix the problems that arise.

Maybe by SP2 it will be really completed.
