New build not installing Windows.

I just put together a new machine for my buddy and the specs are as follows.

Asus A8N5X Mobo
AMD Athlon 3800+
2x512 Crucial Ballistix Ram
Nvidia GeForce 7600 PCI-e
Antec Neo HE 500 PSU

When trying to install Windows, it got to the point where it's copying files to the hard drive. The first time I tried it said a file couldn't be copied to the hard drive, and prompted me to retry. When I hit retry the computer shut down on its own.

I tried installing again and it said a different file couldn't be copied, and before I hit enter to retry it shut down again.

I then tried a different cd and it copied most of the files over, but I got a BSOD with an error missing or corrupt NTFS.SYS file. I thought this may be due to the fact that I was doing quick formats on the drive, so I went to do a full format on it. It got to about four percent before the computer shut itself off again.

This made me think it was a cooling issue with the processor. I installed the heatsink that came with the processor, but I've never used the thermal pad so I dont know if I did it right. I just put the black spongy pad on the processor, and put the heatsink on top of it to install it. I'm pretty sure this is the proper way, and the heatsink was cool to the touch so I don't know what the issue could be.

Any help that you guys could give me with these problems would be greatly appreciated.

You put the black spongy thing on the CPU?! You mean the piece of packing foam that comes in the little plastic case with the CPU? That's just packing foam! The thermal pad is the small layer of thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink, (pic) it's usually got a piece of plastic over it to keep it clean, you remove the plastic strip and install it on the CPU. If you've really got the packing foam on your CPU-- wow I don't know what that would do. But you definitely need to get that off and clean the cpu and heatsink with alcohol, apply some new thermal paste and hope you didn't ruin anything.

Your heatsink should have some warmth to it. It sounds like it is overheating and turning off. Another thing is that your power supply and Asus motherboard may not get be getting along.

Yeah, what they said ^ and also, crank your DDR voltage to 2.8 volts in the Advanced > JumperFree Configuration section of the motherboard's BIOS since you're using "fancy" RAM.

My 3800+ heatsink looked like this one (pics). As you can see, the thermal grease is that grey square under the clear plastic cover.
