problem solved, dumbass me

so I build a cheap box for a friend using :

dual core intel 2.2ghz
ECS 945GCT-M motherboard
winctec 2gb 667 pc5300

board has on board vga/eth/audio etc so theres no expansion cards, and theres one SATA hdd and ide dvd/cd

so I put it together and try and power it up for the first time, cpu and case fans spin but nothing comes up on the (known working) monitor.
the cheap case i bought doesnt have one of those pc speakers, which is fine because the board didnt have a pin header for one. its been years since I built a pc, do they not do these anymore?

anyway so that means I cant tell whats going on from any error beeps or error LEDs on the board or anything..

🙁 since i dont really have the pc's available to test the cpu/ram on other boxes am I just assuming the motherboard needs to be rma'd?

one thought I had, the board supported 20 or 24 pin power plugs, and also has a 12v1 port as well.. the cheap power supply I'm using has a 20 pin, and also the 12v power but the 4-plug 12v is zip-tied in a couple places to the 20-pin atx plug, as if they are intending you to plug it into the available extra space on the 20/24 port atx power slot on the motherboard

hard to put into words but basically is it ok to use that as a 24 pin or am I supposed to bust out my wire cutters and cut these zip ties so I can move that 4prong adapter over to the 12v1 port on the other side of the motherboard, or does it really not matter which one its plugged into

one final paranoid thought was maybe I somehow put the cpu in backwards or something.. like I said its been years since my last build so I'm not familiar with this socket 775 chip, is it possible to put in backwards, I dont want to dissasemble the stock hsf to check

Pretty hard to get a 775 in backwards. If the 20/4 pin wires are zip tied together they most likely intend it to be used for a 24 pin. Odds are if the single 4pin isn't plugged in, the comp won't turn on. Do you have a PSU with both connectors to try?

well I tested it with the 4pin not plugged into anything, and with this configuration the power button generally does nothing, but maybe 1 out of 5 times it will turn on and spin up the cpu and power supply fans, but again nothing comes up on the monitor at all

so i plug it back in and now power button works consistently but still no video signal.. so ghey

okay, I'm an idiot... I somehow failed to see the extra 4pin 12v plug coming out of the PSU, plugged that in to the available port and bingo everything works fine.

😱

also despite there being no case speaker nor speaker mobo header, somehow its capable of producing the POST beeps so rock on, technology

I'm having similar problems but there's no available 4 pin header coming out of my motherboard to accommodate that 4 pin plug from my PSU. Mobo is MSI KT3 Ultra2, socket 462.
