New build Neo2, computer shuts down immediately

I just built this computer. K8N Neo2 with AMD 64 3000.

I have the ATX 20-pin power connector, 12v power connector connected, along with the video card and the front panel power switch from the case. I also have the two sticks of 512 MB ram installed.

When I turn the computer on, the CPU fan turns on for about a second, and then everything shuts down. If I wait a few minutes and try it again, same thing happens.

I tried using a different power supply, same problem.

The thing is, the K8N has nine spots in which to put motherboard standoffs. However the case only came with five of the standoffs and I had two lying around so there are two holes without the standoffs in them. Should I be concerned about that?

Thanks.

The problem is likely one of 2 things, either the mb is shorted to the case, or the mb is not receiving the cpu fan signal. You can pull the mb out and test it on the bench (if it fires up, it was a short). Make sure that the cpu fan is plugged into the correct header, the correct way (it is keyed, but I have seen the key tab broken off the header by someone forcing the connector on backwards).

Stand offs keep the mb stable without live electrical points contacting the case. I reccomend using the proper number of them as it keeps the mb from flexing (and possibly breaking) when you insert ram, cards, cables, etc.. You can buy them online or at most small computer shops. They are cheap. Take one with you if you shop locally, as they come in 2 heights, and come in a couple of different thread patterns.

Do I need to connect all of the front panel connectors to the motherboard for testing purposes? Or is just the power switch sufficient?
