Hi All - I'm putting together a new build to replace a 4 year old 3770k build that is somewhat aging (ok, not really). Major driving factors for the new build are 1) I want to take advantage of some of the new storage connectors (m.2 in particular); and 2) I need to consolidate and retire a bunch (i.e., 7) of aging mechanical drives. Also - I just like building PC's and I have the money to do so.

Anyway, I'm looking for feedback on the build below. But first, the required questionaire:

1. What will the PC be used for: 50% work (multimonitor setup with many applications open at once); 50% gaming and other BS.
2. Budget - really not limited. I would like to keep it under $3000 if possible
3. Country parts will be purchased from: USA
4. Brand preferences: Asus and Gigabyte Mobos, Nvidia video cards, Samsung SSDs.
5. Reused parts: Asus GTX980TI (reference), Current triple monitor setup (for now - all three monitors run at 1200P); 2x 256 Samsung 840 EVO SSDs
6. Overclocking planned? Oh hell yes.
7. Monitor size and resolution - Currently 3x 24" monitors at 1200P. May upgrade to a 27-28" gsync monitor.
8. Planned build date - Soon - 1-2 weeks maybe
9. Software needed - Windows 10 pro 64bit, MS Office (visio and word) - perhaps some BD playback software

OK - enough boring stuff - on to the parts:

other notes I know that I am planning for a lot of fast SSD storage. The m.2 Samsung is probably overkill but I really like the idea of offloading storage to a non-sata connector as I have a huge amount of data on mechanical drives that will be eating up the rest of the on-board sata connectors.

If you want to pay up to $400 for a CPU, and you're overclocking, then you should get a 5820K. The 5930K doesn't offer anything that would help you; there's also the 5960X with 8 cores, but I'd get the 5820K and see if Intel releases a 10-core Broadwell drop-in replacement in 3-6 months.

With that, the only other thing you have to change is your motherboard, to an X99.

Yea, I agree with the other posters. 399.00 is overpriced for the 6700k. I would go with 5820k. For sure you need faster ram with Skylake, dont think it is so critical with HW-E.

Your psu seems overkill as well.

Interesting - I was not aware that the 5920k held up so well against the new skylake processors. Thanks for the info .

Question now is do I wait for the Broadwell-E update in early 2016, or bite now? Decisions decisions.

If I do go with a skylake build I will update the ram selection. Honestly I just picked a kit that a lot of people seem to use on pcpartpicker with their skylake builds.
