I am replacing my mother board and processor on my home PC. It boots up and then asks for the boot disc. Will I have to reformat my HDD or is there something I'm missing. This is my first time try this.
Thanks

Replacing the motherboard will require you to repair your XP install since that is how XP determines its activation code. that is why you can replace darn near everything else without problems (sans drivers). I have heard that if you replace it with a motherboard that has the same chipset as the old board then you should be fine, but you may have to repair anyway.

As stu says.

Also, if you just upgraded your system, why not spend a few hours starting from scratch and get a real increase in speed.
Seems to be a natural progression:
Bakup
Upgrade system.
Format
reinstall.

Takes me about 16hours to get it how I like it.

That looks like what I'll have to do. The computer boots to XP and I didn't have to do the repair. But now it still shows the old board and no new chip set. Looks like I'll do the backup. What program do you use to do the backup?

If you are going to backup docs/settings etc, just burn them to dvd.

If you are talking about cloning a drive, then Acronis True Image is great.

But there are also free disk clones:
Go to the manufacturer of your hdd's site and they should have a utility.
