Hi. I'm trying my first build. Everything went together at first, no smoke on powerup, all fans spinning. I got to the bios screen, disabled the floppy (since I didn't install one), set first boot device to CDROM, inserted the windows CD, and felt pretty good.
But part way through windows installation, the computer would hang. I'd restart, and it would hang in a different spot. One time it actually gave me an "exception." At first I thought, maybe my CD is bad, or maybe the optical drive isn't working so well. But after a while, I decided it could be something else.
So I went into the bios, and noticed that my RAM was at 1T. Seem to remember that is bad, so changed from AUTO to 2T. After that, I couldn't even get to the BIOS again.
So I turned it off, cleared the CMOS, and got back to the BIOS screen. Temperatures looked good. Set the bios to boot from CDROM, saved & exited. Same thing -- it would hang at various spots in the install.
So I turned the computer off. Started to write this message, had an idea, turned it back on -- but now, I can't get anywhere. Lights come on, fans spin, but nothing shows up on the monitor at all -- in fact, the monitor gets no signal.
Perhaps the scariest part is, the motherboard has a 2-digit POST code display, and now only one of the digits is lighting up -- the first digit, and it says "F". The second digit is just blank. Or, sometimes an "F" jumps back and forth between the first and second digit. No smoke or heat though. Case's reset switch no longer works, and I have to hold down the power switch for it to turn off.
Any help? EPOX AF570+ ULTRA, AMD X2, Patriot DDR 667, Gigabyte Silent-Pipe II 7600 GT, Enermax Liberty 400 Watt (30 Amps on +12v). The motherboard may be too new and untested -- it just showed up on newegg a little over a week ago. Any advice for a newb? I did use the motherboard standoffs. CPU heat sink and memory are cool to the touch, as is the power supply. Chipset and video card heat sinks don't feel hot either.
