Hi
WARNING This is a long one.
I have some experience with computers but I am far from advanced.
I built a PC (see below please.) This is my first complete build although I have rebuilt all of my PC?s as needed. Is a month of grief normal on a new build? I tried several windows installs and the problem is the same throughout. It started when I Built the PC and I have been unable to get rid of it. I will list a bunch of the things I have tried but I have tried a lot more. I can try to list it all from my journal if it would help. This was purpose built to play Video files and now it can do almost anything else but can not play MKV,MPEG,AVI, Xvid, and many others. There were other problems with the build such as having to run the SATA drives as IDE until I learned to slipstream the drivers in (no floppy on this one.) Then the next two installs had no LAN or no Sound device and that was a pain to fix.
I either need someone to tell me where to look for the source of the problem and how to fix it or someone to direct me to some comprehensive hang hunting guides. I am prepared to toss out the mobo and try another if I must but that may mean buying a new XP copy again because of the change and I am way over budget now!!! Anybody have any suggestions, questions or comments?
When I play back a video file after a while (perhaps 15 minutes) the picture will stop moving for several seconds then the sound hangs and stutters then the screen goes blank(?No input? notice from LCD.) I need to press the reset button to fix it. While it is happening I cannot open other programs but I can move the mouse. It can sometimes happen if a Bit torrent client is left running for 8 hrs+ or when using several programs at once but only if it is already stressed from one of the above.
-Temps remain normal (do not rise) CPU use remains below 30%.
-I have run the video card stability test from Freestone group and there is no problem with the card.
- I removed all video players, as many codecs as I could and rebooted. I tried a number of players one at a time but the hang/crash still happens including Windows Media players. Oddly enough I can play U Tube vids for quite a while without a problem but the system does slow after a while.
-Replaced the original 500w PSU with a new 750 w unit. Problem happens with both.
-I replaced my new OCZ ram with new Crucial that exactly matched the Mobo?s requirements. I replaced the PSU from 550 to 750w.
-I have I front fan and 2 rear plus a larger hi-performance fan on the PSU. The Vid Card fan is working as is the Processor fan.
-I updated the Media card drivers the Bios and onboard sound drivers right after the OS was installed although it can be hard to figure out what drivers to get for the card since ATI, and diamond are both involved. I removed and replaces the entire ATI catalyst suite. T tried disabling the Sigma Tel Audio and uninstalling the drivers to see if I had a conflict. It crashes with video only.
-I have tried changing some Bios settings but have restored the Default.
I am mystified . The Mobo itself is kind of rough around the edges and I Had a lot of trouble getting everything to work with it.
