New Build Graphics Card Help!!!

Im starting a new build soon and i am tryin to figure out what kind of graphics card i would like to get. I cant stand spending more on a graphics card the a cpu but im begining to think its necessary for any kind of hardcore gaming. I have a 128mb 9200se right now and when i do the video stress test in Counter Strike Source I get a measley 23fps. I hear of people on there gettin well over 100. Is my card really that bad? Whats a good card for the $$$?

:bump: Is the 23 fps right considering the 2600+ oc and the 9200se? May be a stupid question but im horrible with graphics cards and its drivin me nuts.

Another problem is my ATItools, keeps reverting back to default, even after i downloaded the mod that is supposed to fix it. I just cant find the oc lock anywhere. Can anyone help me with this?

It's probably your 9200 that's holdin you back, that card REALLY sux if you're trying to play CS:S. If you don't want to spend more on your graphics card then on your CPU (assuming you get an AMD64), the Nvidia 6600GT is probably a good option. Just make sure you get PCI-express on your new computer, unless you don't plan to upgrade for a long time. You can get a PCI-e version for under $200.

Yes, a 9200se is that bad. Not only is it the scumsucking bottom of the line (no offense), but it's the SE version of the 9200 as well. This means that they cut every corner possible to make a cheap card. I highly doubt anyone ever inted this card to be used for any game put out after 1998 (for example the original Tribes or possibly the original Half Life).

As for a reccomendation. . . i would not even attempt to play a game using the Source enging with anything less than a 9600XT -- 130-$160 (Again, this is the absolute worst case scenario)

However, i think the best bang for the buck right now is a Radeon 9800\9800 Pro -- $170 and up.

IMO, buying anything less than a 9800 right now is just not a good idea.

Yeah, the 9200Se is one of the worst cards you can even find sold today. I bought mine because I needed a cheap card that could use DX8 for my programming.

I OCed the card to 266, 233 using ATITool. Did you download a different set of drivers (I got the omega ones). the catalyst drivers don't allow you to Oc a 9200 or 9500 IIRC.

just for a reference, i get 107FPS on the video stress test at 1280x1024 4xaa 8xaf reflect all 😀 *waits for person with x800 to come by and destry score*
