I have a bit of a problem and if anybody can help me I would be very grateful. First let me give you the specs of my new machine.

Cpu: Q6600 G0 @ 3 Ghz
Gpu: Gbyte HD4870
MB: Asus P5Q Standard
RAM: 4GB Corsair 5-5-5-15 1066Mhz DDR2 (Twin2x4096 ? 8500C5D)
PSU: Corsair 750w
HD: 750Gig Samsung
OS : vista home prem 64

This is my first self build, its all housed in the Antec 900.

Basically games stutter and and the textures seem to step. By step I mean that as I pan the camera its takes time for the textures to catch up so I get a step running up the screen as well as some little line-like gfx glitches.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Anandtech.

What are the temps of your HD4870?

Did you plug both power cord into the card?

What drivers did you install?

Hey

The HD470 runs between 70-80c which seems to be normal for this card.

Yup (oh how I wish that was the problem)

I have catalyst 8.7, However I've not looked for any P5Q chipset updates.

I have noticed that one of the 4 LEDs near the plugs at the back of the card has never come on and the other 3 switch on at start-up.

Thanks for the welcome and swift reply cutthroat.

Clock your cpu and ram back to stock speeds and try playing the games again. Possibly overclocking causing the issues.

Tried that didnt work, I've been playing with the bios settings trying to fix the problem its had very little effect tbh, although i did manage to get a couble of BSODs which was exciting. I've sent a request for help to gigabyte to see what they can do for me.

Thx for the reply, anybody got any more ideas?

Only other thing I can think of...

Did you have an Nvidia card before? And did you completely remove the drivers including using Driver Sweeper before installing the Cat's.

Its a clean install, as it was a new build. I have set the fan speed on the 4870 to 40% and got the temp down to 50C loaded. Still have the problem.

I just ran furmark it runs at 30-40 fps in 1680x1050 but it jumps every second or so, but there is no effect on the fps?!?!

I really dont know what is causing this :(
