New Build for a friend

Hey guys,

My friend asked me about this build but I was wondering what you guys think and what your thoughts were. Here's what he said:

im obviously gonna be spending more like 1500 with all the other stuff but do these parts look compatible? and whats the deal with the video cards? why is there $120 difference between those two? im asuming the first one is better but i have no idea why. would getting two radeon hd 5770 be better than one Geforce GTX 460? should i just get the one geforce and get a second one down the road? what do you recommend for the video card setup? and what size psu should i get? 750w or bigger?

Is he building this or are you? Otherwise, you might want to think about an OEM so you dont get to play free tech support for the rest of that machines existence...and maybe longer.

I will be helping him build it, so I will probably go to OEM route for those parts and also use newegg as the place we're gonna order from I'm not too familiar with tiger direct.

MonsterMac -- I think what Chapbass meant by "OEM" is purchasing a computer from Dell, HP, etc. Reason being, if you build this computer for your friend... anytime he has a problem with it, you will most likely be expected to provide free tech support.... which can become a huge headache.

Good deal. Sounds like you've got all your bases covered in that respect, then. :thumbsup:

I don't know enough about vid cards to comment on them, but the motherboard and CPU that you linked are compatible.

Is this for gaming? I'm assuming it is since you were thinking of Crossfire.

If so, you're spending your money in the wrong place. You can get an i5 760 + GA-P55A-UD3 for $304 AR. That's half the price of what you were thinking of and there really isn't very much difference between a 950 and a 760 in gaming.

Take that $300 you save and put it into a GTX 480. i5 760 + GTX 480 will knock the socks off of an i7 950 + HD5770 CFX

The Truth. The 9xx series from intel is more tuned for CAD and 3D Rendering, the 1156 socket processors outperform it in games. The only real difference between the 1156 i5 and i7 is Hyperthreading, which only comes in handy when apps can use more than 4 threads (there are only a few at this time that use 2, and there's only 2 that I know of that even use 4, which are GTA IV and the upcoming FFXIV).
