Hi everybody, could use a little advise here as I've been out of the loop for a while.

I'm looking to upgrade my desktop to some better performing parts and as I have most of the components I will just be upgrading my MB, RAM, and processor. Also, let me say that I'm upgrading from a AMD 939 2.0 X2 with 2GB DDR ram so any upgrade would be significant.

I've decided to go with the E8400 but I've run into a dilema when choosing the MB and RAM. For DDR2 I am looking at the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R and G. Skill 2x4GB 1066 (F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK) @ 5-5-5-15.

For DDR3 I was looking at the Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR and G. Skill 2x4GB 1333 (F3-10666CL8D-4GBHK) @ 8-8-8-21

The price difference is only $20 from newegg so price isn't really a deterrent for DDR3, in that case should I opt for the DDR3? Both motherboards seem pretty solid and I'm not looking to do any overclocking, just solid stable performance for general use (some gaming, photoshop, vidoe/audio encoding).

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the only reason to get DDR3 is if you plan on using it later on down the road with a new build. However, by that time you will probably want to get faster DD3 memory. I believe it would be overkill to put DD3 into a 775 board. The 1066 ram you priced should be more than enough to get you to the overclock you want. I don't think you are going to get a performance boost from DDR3 either.

If you're not overclocking then the answer is neither.

DDR2-800 will offer the same performance for less money.

Thanks everyone for your advise, I think I'm gonna with the DDR2 board and get the G. Skill 5-5-5-15 DDR2-800 RAM - $13 savings. I can get 8GB and still sneek in under $400!
