I am a novice when it comes to building computers and bought the parts for a new one today.

PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...tent-_-text-_-

CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...tent-_-text-_-

RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...tent-_-text-_-

MOBO http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...tent-_-text-_-

Now, when I hook everything up the blue light comes on on the powersupply, but when I turn the powerswitch on, it works for less than 1/4 of a sec and then shuts down.

What could the issue be? Please use layman terms since Im not a computer guru. Thanks

It sounds like you've got a short. Most likely the back of the motherboard is touching your case somewhere.

Are you sure you properly installed the Motherboard Standoffs in your case?

They look like this: http://www.google.com/products?hl=e...group&ct=image&resnum=1&sqi=2&ved=0CDUQzAMwAA

They are supposed to go in between your motherboard and the case, so the back of the motherboard doesn't touch the case.

I'm almost 100% sure you've got a short somewhere.

I'm not using those on my build lol. I think my mobo is touching the case. No shorts here though.

Yeah you gotta be careful with that... I learned the hard way when I was a noob and installed a friend's motherboard in his case without one. Couldn't figure out why the motherboard functioned outside the case, but not in the case until I thought about those little motherboard standoffs.

Sometimes they come pre-installed in the case, but many cases I have seen do not have them pre-installed. It's an easy thing to forget for someone who is new to computers.

Your cpu is possibly overheating.

Remove the cpu cooler and re-attach making sure to use a dab of arctic silver... make sure that it is getting full contact. if not, your cpu will turn on, overheat and turn off.

Also, make sure the CPU fan is plugged into the correct MB header.
If not, the BIOS will not see the RPM pulses from the fan and do what it's supposed to do: shut down before the CPU melts down.

I really doubt that it is overheating of the CPU. Main reason is that it takes a VERY short amount of time to turn off, which indicates a short. If it was overheating it would probably take a few more seconds for it to turn off.

Well clearly there are... put the standoffs in like the manual says you idiot ;)

No need to call anyone idiots.. Especially when that guy wasn't even the OP. He doesn't have any shorts right now, because his build is functioning fine. I would say that it would be a wise decision to tear the build down and install the standoffs though, to avoid future problems when the case gets jostled.

twas a joke, hence the wink... no offence meant.

Well exactly. You should always build your system correctly and have the right amount of thermal paste and use the standoffs and everything else. This is a techie site isn't it?
