New build; CPU fan spinning full speed all the time?

I just pieced together a new build:

PII x2 555 unlocked cores @ 3.4Ghz
MSI 785GTM-E45

2x2GB Crucial

For some reason I can not get the CPU fan to only spin at the "required" speed. It's going full speed all the time (even when the CPU is stock)

If I turn on C&Q it auto throttles the CPU speed (which I don't want)
What am I missing here?

Check if;

A) The fan is on full speed in BIOS, if so enable whatever fan control system they have, I don't know what MSI calls it but I'm sure they have a setting to speed up the fan when needed. CNQ throttles CPU+FAN afaik.
B) Check your CPU temperature, you may be running really hot and the fan does indeed need to run at full speed, in which case something else will be needed.

This may sound like a simple question, but is the fan plugged into the CPU fan header on the motherboard?

Yup, make sure it's plugged into the CPU fan header. If it's plugged into one of the other fan headers or a molex straight from the power supply, fan speed control won't work.

If this isn't the issue, check in the BIOS to make sure fan speed control is enabled. If it is, check the PWM profile, some boards have a couple options, for example, quiet and aggressive. Make sure it's set to the low noise profile.

Also if you're running overclocking software in Windows that was included w/the motherboard, it might be overriding the BIOS fan speed control and running the fan at 100%.

It is plugged into the CPU header (I'm not that dumb :))
I'm wondering if its due to the fact that when I unlock the cores on PII that the temps in Windows are unreadable (though in BIOs they are?)

This is drviing me nuts.
Even with C&Q activated (and thus throttling the CPU speed speed it seems) the fan constantly spins full speed.
I've never seen something like this.

I have a similar problem with my Foxconn motherboard in my HTPC. It actually throttles the cpu fan fine until I load the CPU and it spins up, but even as the cpu cools back down, the fan stays at 100%.

CnQ will not work for some reason as well even though it is enabled and I cannot lower my voltage below 1.4v, which I find annoying as well - sorry, venting about my mobo.

I suppose this may be silly to ask, but have you updated to the most recent bios?

Fan speed control is enabled in the BIOS, right?

edit: Glancing over the manual, it looks like you might need to install MSI's Dual Core Center software to take advantage of automatic fan speed control.
