I am wanting to upgrade my computer, my current one is pretty much maxed out for upgrades and am leaning toward getting an intel processor unless amd has a better one.

I was thinking either the Core i7 920 or a higher end core 2 quad

items in bold are what I want to upgrade

my current computer (motherboard/cpu about 4-5 years old i think)

Socket 939 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2 Ghz

Asus A8N-SLI Premium Motherboard

4xSata hard drives (2x300GB, 1x320GB, 1x500GB,) + 2xUSB external, 1x Firewire external hard drive

4xGB (4x1GB) DDR-400 Corsair Value select Memory

EVGA 8800GTS 640mb PCI Express video card (640-P2-N821-AR)

X-fi titanium sound card

PCI wireless card

Thermaltake Armor Case (Does NOT have side panel fan) 4x case fans

1 Plextor DVD+-R burner

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Watt Power supply

ViewSonic X Series VX922 19" monitor (max resolution of 1280x1024)

I am wanting to upgrade the CPU/Memory/Motherboard and maybe a new monitor

the budget for the cpu/memory/motherboard is currently around $500 US Dollars, maybe a little more if it is worth it. Or just wait to upgrade monitor later

If I have enough money left after I might consider getting a new case, one that is smaller and easier to carry.

there is currently this deal at newegg

CPU/Motherboard/Memory Dealhttp://promotions.newegg.com/Intel/Corei7Bundle/index.html?cm_sp=SubCat_ProcessorsDesktops-_-IntelCorei7Bundle-_-http%3a%2f%2fpromotions.newegg.com%2fIntel%2fCorei7Bundle%2f118x118.gif

any help would be great

Being that you've currently got an older S939 dual-core system (as opposed to a modern quad-core) there's no reason to go to a Core2 Quad over an i7.

To get an i7 CPU/MB/Mem you're going to have to stretch that $500 a bit, but not much.

Even a stock-clocked i7 920 would be an immense upgrade over what you have now.

With your current monitor, your 8800GTS 640MB GPU is more than enough. Your PS is excellent as well. Don't see anything I would change with anything else.

A i7 920 system with 6GB of RAM would be a very nice new rig. Good luck.

If you have a mircocenter nearby check out their ads. They had i7s for much cheaper than newegg.

I think I would like to go with a i7 920 system, any suggestions for a motherboard? Maybe the ASUS P6T Deluxe V2? the nearest mircocenter is about 4 hours away so that won't work very well. should I get an aftermarket cooler or not? I currently have 4 sata hard drives and 1 sata dvd burner and might add more hard drives later.
