Well I am considering a number of different things to do and here is one of them tell me what you think

Intel E7400
Asus P5k mobo
2x2 gig corsair ddr2 800
xfx gtx 260
WD 500gig aaks hard drive
Antec 300 case
lg dvd burner
Corsair 550 watt psu
Windows 7
Asus 1920x1080 monitor

Total $700
I figure this build will hold me over for a while until i7 becomes more into my price range.
I just cannot afford to drop $550 on a mobo, cpu and ram right now plus I need all the other parts still.

Does this build go good together?
I mainly will play call of duty as it is mainly the only game I ever play besides grid

What you have right now, Bman, is a pretty good build. If you can afford a quad core, I'd recommend it, but for right now (if you really can't afford more than $700), then stick with the E7400 and overclock it a bit. The GTX 260 will pretty good for what you're playing (I am not sure about GRID, never played it before). But for Call of Duty, your new build will do pretty well.

why do you recomend a quad core?
All I am gonna be doing is web surfing and playing games mainlky cod and grid.I am not into alot of games that is why I figured for what I am gonna be doing that this build should last me a little while.

As long as it can run cod MW2 fine I am A OK

If you can get all that 700 then go for it. I had a gtx 260 216 once and it was a good card. If your looking to run games 1920x1080 then your gonna need more gpu. If you don't mind cutting back res. then you'll be fine. For what your doing dual core should be fine.

I don't think i7 will ever drop in price because that is Intel's high end platform.

Your component choices seem pretty good.

Gtx 280 would be pretty good. Thats what I have hooked up to my 1920x1080 lcd tv in my living room. I got an evga gtx 280, oc'ed it, now plays all games great even crysis. Chews up call of duty even without oc.

I am trying to find some benchmarks for call of duty 4.

I figure with the e7400 I will be ok as long as I go hi res and put more stress on the video card.

I am having a bit of trouble finding good E7400 and cod4 benchmarks

I want the E7400 thinking as long as I can get it to 3.6ghz or higher I will be in good shape.

Can someone please lead me to a good review/benchmark for E7400 and one for cod4,hopefully the cod4 will have it at 1680x1050 and 19x12 or 19x10

Also do you think the asus p5k mobo will be a good oc'er with the E7400?

Thanks guys

This is such a pain in my ass.I am looking everywhere at reviews and prices.
I just dont know what I want to do.

I know that I dont want to upgrade for about 2 years after this build.I am seeing that some games are using the quads as some games are more cpu dependent then others.

I saw a review for the q9400 and the e8600 and they were both back and forth in the benchmarks for the games.

What do you guys think I should do here in this situation?

I am only web browsing and playing games on this new build.I know a E8400 is fast as shit but if games start using the quads more I may be in trouble in terms of my framerate.
I have no clue if what cod MW2 requirements may be and that is my main interest game.

Feel free to chime in here guys.I dont have to purchase my cpu soon,I have til july 3rd to order my cpu, mobo, ram and video card

I just need to figure out what to get in terms of my cpu and video card

Oh I forgot to add I am gonna go with a 1680x1050 monitor. This should affect my video card choice now.
Also what nvidia card for 16x10 anyways

You could always consider an AMD Phenom II x3 720 CPU. It's right between what you looking at. There are other options too, so don't try and limit yourself too much on which parts to get.

I will probably get a quad as I do have other things running in the background.I will not upgrade my cpu and mobo for at least 2 years so 2011 would be the earliest for me to upgrade the cpu.

I am having such a hard time finding good articles and benchmarks comparing quads and duals. Some say s775 is a waste now with i7 being out.I would love to get i7 but I am on a budget and i believe that a core 2 quad will do me just fine.

I just have to find some good quad vs dual benchies so I can make up mymmind on what quad cpu to get.

I would like to stay around $600 for cpu, mobo, ram and video card
This will leave me $200 for a monitor

Here's an idea to fit your budget:
$438 combo price on q9400/GTX 275 GPU!!
~$108 - $10 MIR = $98 GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3LR LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
$60 shipped!! G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

Now the q9400 is no slouch and the GTX 275 is quite good too! The mobo is a good one and can OC well, which your probably going to be doing later in it's life. The RAM is one of the better sets that you can get. It runs at 800 mHz CAS4 speed (4-4-4-12 timing) all on the stock voltage of 1.8v!! This stock voltage will come in handy later when/if you OC your system.

Total = ~$606 - $10 MIR = $596 shipped!!! hard to beat that combo for the $. AMD has similar offerings, but you show interest in an Intel build, so I'm going to leave that up to you.

All I have been doin is reading and looking at benchmarks.
I cannot believe some people are gettting the i7 920 to 4.1 ghz on air, that is crazy

i7 cpu, mobo.and ram runs $550 and I am considering it now as a option. It will blow my budget out of the water once I add in a gtx 260

I am still stuck on what res to run.If I go i7 I should go with 19x12 as it does have excellent sli scaling.I can get one gtx 260 now and get another when I have the cash

This is really frustrating.I dont want to do a core 2 duo and have to upgrade sooner,I guess I just want this rig to last as long as possible and i7 is gonna be the way to go.

Okay this is how I look at things.
* Pay more $ on i7 now and upgrade in 2-3 years (new build)
* Pay less $ now on a C2Q and take the ~$200 in savings and sock it away for a GPU upgrade in a year or two. Then you still have a bitchin' gaming rig for 2-3 years.
* Pay less $ now on a C2D setup and save ~$200 or more over the i7 build. Upgrade the GPU in a year or two.
* Wait for the i5 to come out and see how it performs. This might be a cheaper option than the i7, but time will tell. If the mobo's cost the same as the i7, than you'd be better off getting a C2D/C2Q system, IMHO.

There are more options too, but I think you get the idea.

Here is another scenario that I came up with

E8400
Asus p5k mobo
Xfx gtx 260
2x2 gskill ddr2 800mhz
WD 500 aaks
LG dvd burner
Antec 300
Corsair 500 watt psu
Asus 21.5 1080p monitor

$818.48 shipped

It will cost me $1,093 if I use a i7 920,msi x58 mobo,and 6gigs of ddr3

It will cost em $815 if I use a Q8400,gigabyte g31 mobo,and 4 gigs of ddr2 1066mhz ram

Everything is fairly close together.I mean either way I look at it I am spending a shit load of money on the rig as I do need the monitor as mine is old and is small, 17inch WS lcd seems a little small now. What to do.
GOtta go and read more reviews/benchamrks

YOur monitor, GPU are going to be THE most important things for you right now with the gaming, so don't cheap on that. Id say go with the best C2D you can get an OC that puppy with some DDR2 memory and a nice HD and psu and you will be fine for 2 years.

I have been seeing alot of nice things about the Q8200.Very fluid game play and I should be able to get it to 3ghz with a TRUE or a freezer 7 pro cooler.

I want to go quad core for sure now.My montior choice really has me stuck right now.If I go with a 1920x1080 monitor then i really need to get a gtx 280
If I go with a 1680x1050 then a gtx 260 should be fine

I was also thinking of going 16x10 and getting a gtx 280

Dude stop second guessing your self, your build is good and could not be improved on much e7400 will do 3.6 ez and gtx260 is best price/performance at $150 right now. You'll be fine at that res unless your playing crysis on very high.
