hey guys...i finally got my computer build after months of waiting ;/ but now im having a problem. i went into the bios, set the comp to bood from cd-rom, put my xp pro disk in and rebooted, and then it gives me an error, BOOT DISK FAILURE. how can i fix this? :S

1) specs please, sounds like you have a hardware or BIOS-config problem 🙂

2) ...unless it's that your WindowsXP CD is not bootable. Is it a genuine Microsoft-made holographic jobbie?

you think if i get a genuine copy of window it wont give me this error? could there be a hardware issue involved, like maybe floppy drive, because i dont have one

Ooops, I pasted a link to HijackThis 😕 Well that has its uses too, but here's what we want: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/trial.mspx The download is an .ISO file. Burn it to CD with Nero or whatever, and you got a bootable WinXP Pro x64 CD. If the system won't boot off of that, then we're back to the hardware/BIOS stuff. 🙂

hehe thanks so much man 😀 ill get my bro to download and burn that for me cause this POS doesnt have a burner or anything :S if that doesnt work i guess ill have to PM you about my hardware/bios stuff 😀 thanks for the help

ok i had my brother download and burn that xp x64 trial and he brought it over and it still gave me the BOOT DISK FAILURE error...why is it saying this?any help?

Presuming that the components in your box are good and hooked up correctly... its sounds like it could be as simple as the CD not being bootable.

When you burned the image, did you simply drop the .iso file onto the CD? (bad) or did you (presuming you are using nero) go to Recorder > Burn Image ?

The iso file is like a carbon copy of a CD and has to be burned in a specific way to get that carbon copy mirrored on a CD including (importantly in your case) the bootable parts of the disc.

Simply creating a cd with that single iso file on it is not going to be useful for anything other than putting your coffee cup on, open the CD on another PC and see if you have a bunch of files and directories on it, or one single .iso file
