New build: Athlon64 3000+ support dual channel memory?

I'm building a new PC for my sister. The specs below:

Abit NF8-V nForce3-250
Athlon64 3000+ socket 754
Corsair VS 512MB (1 stick)
Seagate 80GB 7200 SATA
GeForce 6200 256MB AGP

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I best assume the Athlon64 3000+ does not support dual channel memory? Hence, having one stick of memory is OK?

Thanks 🙂

Nothing 754 supports dual channel memory
Everything 939 supports dual channel memory

In other words you are correct, One stick of ram wont cost you any performance.

Thanks but will it work with one stick? I'm curious because the last PC I built for her was an early Pentium which required 2 identical RAM.

Why would your sister need 512Mb of RAM?

It doesn't appear he is building a gaming machine, so why would she need more?

You reckon 256MB of RAM is sufficient for Office XP, emailing and web browsing? FYI it's only a $20 difference.

No.

Get 512 reguardless of what she is doing.

XP works with 256, but sucks. Get 512.

Of course it will, don't worry!
And get 512 Mb Ram, not 256 Mb, Xp will use more than 200 Mb of Ram all time.

LOL .. my mate is running XP on a Celron A @331Mhz "<-- Stock", and 2x64Mb of SD RAM (168 pin) running at 66Mhz, and a 4GIG HDD .. LMFAO .. and it still runs but vvvvvvvery slow ... the swap file is huge on there as you would expect it to be... i told him to use 2000 for better performance but he prefers the GUI from XP ..

but yeah Win XP will need 512 to run comfortably, but you will be able to run it on 256Mb's of ram just not advisable ..

Yep get 512mg of ram. The price has come down a bit and its worth it.

Also if she is not gaming save some money and get a Sempron 3000+

I agree, but the strange thing is I can't find a 64MB or 128MB GeForce 6200 card in AGP.

128meg of ram but also 128bit memory.

You do better getting a radeon 9600/9559 or a FX 5500 since they are cheaper with 128bit memory. The 6200 cards that are cheap only have 64bit memory so that is a wash.

Cheap but has 128bit memory.

Even cheaper and still does DX9 and has 128bit memory.

256bit memory only started in cards faser than a 9700...I Idont think they make 256bit 6200s....cuz even the 6600GTs are 128bits.

I said 128bit. Most cheap 6200 are 64bit, so better to go with a "old" gpu that supports 128bit as it would still be faster
