Im looking to replace my sons athlon XP1600 with Ti4200 with a new build. On a tight budget and was looking at the athlon 64x2 3600 brisbane and the asus M2A-VM with AMD 690G graphics chip. He s not a big gamer and the ti4200 handles everything he does now. I would probably be looking at adding 7600 or similar in not to distant future.
Im wondering how the 690G ig compares to the ti4200 in performace? In the future if he wanted to play games at a decent level would a 7600 or similiar be ok for most games? Thx for any help

More importantly, the ti4200 is only Dx8 and already cannot run some games, regardless of performance.

Thanks so the 690G video should be better then the ti4200. Will adding something like a 7600GT latter be a bigger boast from 690G or would holding off for a value DX10 card make sense down the line.

It's really hard to say at this point. The 7600 GT's DX10 equivalent, the 8600GT/GTS, offers more performance but at higher prices. In addition, the performance of this card is less than other, similarly priced cards (X1950 PRO comes to mind). If future-proofing and longetivity is important to you, then it may be worth it to wait for ATI's DX10 midrange and to watch prices settle to a more reasonable point. Otherwise, 7600 GT or similar should be an excellent choice for mild to moderate gaming.
