New build - A few questions

I'm building a new system that needs to be a jack of all trades type thing. Sound design, Photoshop, Media stuff, Gaming, Movies and general use.

So far I have narrowed it down fairly well but i still have a few uncertainties.

MOBO - Gigabyte UD3R or DS4P? I have narrowed it down to these two. Theres an AUS$8 where I am buying them from.
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Pro...ec.aspx?ProductID=2839 or http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Pro...ew.aspx?ProductID=2937
CPU - Intel Q9400 or I could upgrade to a Q9550 for AUS$80 more
RAM - 4G Kit-800(2x2G) Kingston
VIDEO - 896M GTX 260 Gigabyte
CASE & PSU - ANTEC P182 w/ an Antec NeoPower 550W - This is going in my bedroom so quietness is a priority. Other people reccomended this but if I can find something cheaper (that isn't too overly ugly) I would go for that.

HDD - WD SATA 1GB
DVD DRIVE - SATA DVD DRIVE SAMSUNG/LG/SONY
WIRELESS LAN - D-Link PCI DWA-510
OS - Vista 64BIT Home Premium OEM
MONITOR 24? 5ms DVI Samsung 2433BW

Main question is around those two motherboards, whether the CPU upgrade is worth it, opinions on quiet cases/PSU's that aren't more expensive than those and just generally whether the system is looking good.

I'd go with the UD3R hands down.

You should really also bump up your HD. 160GB is old school, has less platter density and offers less capacity than a 640GB WD "Black".

Ok UD3R it is. Good thing thats the cheaper one as well.

And yes thats meant to say 1TB 🙂 A gigabyte wouldnt get me too far.

Anybody think i should go up a step to the Q9550? This is with the recent price drops btw.

I will probably go around in stores looking for a case...

The q9550 is an awesome chip - if it doesn't stretch your budget too far, you certainly won't regret it. Plus your rig will probably last a bit longer that way.

Also I was getting the motherboards mixed up. The UD3R I have linked is the EP45T which does DDR3. The RAM i am getting is DDR2. I am guessing they aren't compatible? 🙁

I hope the place I am shopping at has a GA-EP45-UD3R otherwise I will just get the DS4P. Oh well...no big deal

To me it's a big deal. Mobos that support DDR3 are usually more expensive and DDR3 ram is MUCH more expensive than DDR2. All that for almost no performance gain that you'll notice.

Which is why I won't be getting it. I'll be getting the DS4P (which ironically is more expensive) that does DDR2 but I can save money on the RAM.

I need eSATA and Firewire as well which means I can't go for some of the cheaper ones.
