New Build, 4870x2 or 2x4870?

I'm building a new rig and wondering what the performance differences would be between 2 4870 1GB's in crossfire and 1 4870x2 2GB.

Space is not an issue.

This computer will be aircooled and used to play Crysis, FC2, 2142.

I think right now 2 4870 1GB's would save me upwards of $80, so is the x2 worth the money?

Really depends on your motherboard & what you want to do later. If you plan to add a third card & only have two slots - grab the X2. The X2 can also save some energy versus the two card setup.

In reviews the 2x 4870 1GB is slightly faster. The 4870x2 downclocks the memory on idle, so it has a better idle power, but the same can be done on the 2x 4870 1GB.

Save $80 and go with the faster 2x 4870 1GB setup.

As stated, a 4870X2 is going to save you power, but 2x 4870 1GB will be cheaper and will most likely get you a higher overclock. It also might be worth it to wait for the 4890 and see how those are (or at least wait for the inevitable price drops on the 4870's).
