Been toying with new i7 $1,000-1,500 configs when i got thinking maybe it would be overkill.

I don't play games. Mostly just use my computer to download, watch .avi's, internet, and play poker.

right now i have a HP laptop that a run an HDMI cable to a 40"lcd. I want to free my laptop.
- Am I right in assuming that this build will be equivalent or out perform my current setup(P8400,3GB Ram, 8600M GT, x-25m SSD)?
-Is the built in video in the i3 530 at least as powerful as my laptop's 8600M GT ?

Then i would agree its overkill. Todays budget systems are actually quite powerfull.

I suppose you mean E8400 instead of P8400? The i3 530 is faster than the E8400, but not by alot.

You can compare them here :

I would think that with your current setup, especially with the X25 SSD, everything should run fine.

Don't know, but i remember seeing alot of benchmarks of the internal IGP when i was reading all the i3 reviews. If you replace the 8600 in your current system with a 5750 (they can be had for 100€) you can probably run all the latest games quite well.

No, he means P8400, which is a laptop CPU. The i3 will certainly be faster for you.

For your purposes, the onboard video will be fine. I would start with this combo since it's such an incredible deal.

if you don't like the PSU, just get it anyway and have it as a backup. just get some antec basicpower ~$50 unit.

That is the same chip/mobo combo I just bought, although I went with cheaper ram.
