i have a small budget for my folks between 400-500. i can build on for them in that price range with a 2800 palermo, maybe even 3100. however there have been a few desent sales at office depot and compusa this week and i am tempted to buy this eMachine comp or a Compaq. both are comparable to my "build". which would be the best for them?

Here are some specific models I found of interest that are avaliable at many national stores.

$500 emachine t6410 skt 754 amd64 3200 512 Mb 160 Gb PATA drive DVD burner
$700 emachine t6520 skt 754 amd64 3400 1024 Mb 200 Gb PATA drive DVD burner and DVD
$750 HP a1130n skt 939 amd64 3500 1024 MB 250 Gb SATA drive DVD burner and DVD

and at Circuit City
$775 emachine t6522 skt 939 amd64 3500 1024 Mb 200 Gb PATA drive DVD burner and TV tuner.

All have ATI Xpress 200 graphics and a 300 watt psu. That $500 emachine might be a skt 754, but it's alot of machine for $500.

It needs more memory, it comes with 256mb, but you can buy that elsewhere.

Here's a weekly special from Outpost.com

P4 3.0ghz
80gb HDD
Intergrated graphics
256k ram (I would stick another 256k stick in)
8x DVD-RW
Keyboard and mouse
XP Home SP2
Nero 6
PowerDVD

GQ 7000 $379

You could upgrade the ram and it would still be under $500 with shipping

About 6 weeks ago, they had the same deal without the $19.00 "handling fee", only $20.00 to bump the HDD to 80GB instead of $30.00, AND a free printer!
