500-600$ for barebone? So still HDD / SDD + Memory + OS cost. So we're looking into minimum of ~800$+ version with HDD and minimum of ~1000$+ for version with sizeable gaming SSD with current SSD prices.

Yeah I'd pay $6-700 for a quad core Iris Pro 5200 SYSTEM...
Intel charges way the hell to much for their CPU's.
It's like $600 minimum for the 5200 isn't it?

I would just love to collect these mini boxes[if money were no option] but >$600 no thank you!
maybe canonical or some other linux guys can grab this for there steam box or some kinda mac mini-esque device.

Maybe you should research what small systems actually cost. A Mac mini for example cost 800$ with an IB Quadcore.
