New branch office network connection...

I am currently working on setting up network office for one of our branch offices about 45 miles away from our headquarters. Currently they are using a Cable modem, but that goes down about two times per week. I am thinking about putting in a private line, running at 256kbps. Being that they will use terminal server, I don't need one much faster than that. What are some good private line solutions. I was thinking a fractional private T1 or Frame Relay, but I have no idea on the costs of them. What do you think would be the best solution for a private line?

Both would work fine. Frame Relay will likely be cheaper. DSL (SDSL) may be cheaper still.

With Frame Relay or Frac T1, other locations could be added and their bandwidth added to the inbound (add channels or circuits) to the central site with little or no change to the physical hardware at the central site. Maybe DSL too, I'm not sure.

Good Luck, Happy New Year.

SDSL or whatever DSL solution that's available in your area will have a lower total cost of ownership over time; you don't need to pay the exorbant fees for a local loop on a T1 or frame relay maintenence charges. Get an SDSL connection, set up a mid-level router in front of it, maybe a VPN tunneling solution as well; that way you can keep the 'private line' functionality and security while still giving your branch office decent internet access without their packets coming all the way back to your network, then out to the 'net :)

Don't forget ISDN. It may not be the best solution, but it's something to consider. You can BOND two 128K PRI lines together to get 256K.
