New Box I'm throwing together

P4 478 based ECS mobo w/audio built in
Celery 2.0 400mhz
512MB PC3200 (obviously not running at it)
Sapphire 9600XT 256MB
40GB SATA150
16x DVD+/-RW
6-1 Card Reader
Generic case w/300W PSU

Basically, my fiancee is coming to stay with me for a few months (she's currently living with her parents cross country), I've got my main box, plus a lappy, but it's an older Toshiba Portege 7200cte, nice for surfing, but I know she likes a few older games, so it won't work for that. Now and then we like playing TA or C&C or something else against each other, so I need something to handle basic 3D/DX9 stuff, which I know the 9600XT will be able to. No floppy needed, but I have a digicam we'll be using a lot so the card reader will be a bonus, as will the DVD burner (we both like downloading anime and burning it, this lets her do that without having to use my comp).

Any suggestions on other hardware? All of that set me back only about $350 w/shipping, nothing too horrible, and I've got a 19" display for it, although I may hook it up to my 36" HD monitor instead, dunno yet.

Well, the Celeron makes Baby Jesus cry, but other than that it's workable. 😛

I know, but 4x the cost for a P4 really isn't worth it for what I need. Hell, I'm really only going to be using this for a few months, then probably sell it off for a small loss or something. I considered one of those newfangled CeleryDs, but didn't feel like shelling out extra for it plus a mobo that'll support it.

Hmmm, I wonder if perhaps the Radeon Xpress 200 chipset with integrated dx9 graphics for amd motherboards would be a better choice in this scenario.

As the nerd at Microcenter said, "Celeron is too lousy for even web surfing."

Step the video up to atleast a 9800pro or 6600gt.

Yeah, not likely 😛...the 9600XT is cheap enough right now to make it a much better choice than ANY integrated graphcis. This board has built in video, which I won't be touching. Plus it'd be sharing system memory, the 9600XT has 256MB of dedicated memory, won't ever have to touch the 512 on the board.

I wouldn't be selling it to someone who had a clue. Very few people around here care what brand mobo it is, I bought it with that because it had SATA, the option for 800mhz FSB, USB2.0 and Firewire, built in Ethernet and Audio, everything I need for a basic box, and under $50 shipped for it. I'm getting the seperate video card only because I do want to be able to do some gaming, and the 9600XT will do what I need perfectly fine.

Might, but I'm kind of an Intel ho so that's what I stick with. Plus the Semprons were about $20 more than what I ended up paying for the Celery, not a huge deal obviously, and I probably could've forked it over if I felt like it, but that much improvement in performance isn't worth it IMO, not for what I need. The Celery runs nice and cool, the box I'm putting it in will keep it down there and run it quiet in my living room, I'll be happy.

dont get a celeron...giant waste of money
my 2.4GHz celeron couldnt load websites as fast as my dsl connection could get them to me
