Hey all...

need some sample configurations for a computer that will be JABOD for extra storage and double as a small web host for my personal blog and such. I don't get much traffic or anything, just need the essentials, and some reliable storage.

Plan to run Apache on some distro of Linux (yet to be settled if you have any suggestions there) , if that helps. Is it complicated at all to file share between my main windows PC, and a fileserver that runs Linux? If it is, i'll just run the Apache webserver from windows...... in which case which version of windows is the best?

As you can see I'm kind of all over the board here, but mainly looking to price out the new box. Thanks.

Based upon your purpose, it sounds like you can use the lowest-cost box you can find that was built after about 2000. 512MB of RAM would be nice. There are lots of $200 (or so) boxes out there (at Fry's or at various online stores).

However, I'd allocate some money for an external hard drive for making backups of your files and your web site.

If you want to do this with zero effort, put a copy of Windows Home Server (around $170) on the box. Or, just buy HP's $600 pre-built WHS box.
