I just received Gateway's 2001 Holiday Catalog, and to my surprise, I see Boston's new BA7800 speakers being offered with their new systems.

From what I can tell from this small picture, the BA7800s feature a down-firing subwoofer with possibly 4, two-way satellites. I cannot be certain of course.

Anyone have any info on this new system? BA's site does not mention it yet. A search on Google yields no info.

I've owned two BA products: the BA635s and the BA4800s. Both have been high-quality, great-sounding products. The BA7500s were a mistake, though, so hopefully BA got their act together with this one.

Before you can ask about price, you have to ask, will it be available for non-Gateway customers?

It's possible that the new BA7800 is a modified version of this Boston/Kenwood system called "Unity." The Unity costs $999.95 at Crutchfield, but the BA7800s would not include the center speaker and DVD player/receiver.

Here are some specs of the Unity System:

Powered sub:
8" cone
100-watt amplifier (RMS)
14"W x 13-13/16"H x 13-3/4"D

Front/rear speakers:
video-shielded, 2-way design with 3" mid/woofer and 3/4" tweeter
wall-mountable
5"W x 6-1/2"H x 4-7/8"D

I'm not seeing any correlation between the Unity and those Boston speakers.

I also digress to the idea that Boston would offer such high-end speakers as a computer setup. Very few companies will let their computer speakers touch their home audio. Even people like Klipsch wouldn't think of it.

I'm all for (now-a-days) buying a home theater and hooking it up to your computer. I am on my way to doing that. I really only have a HT sub right now.

"The Unity system will retail for $999 in October. The three quarter-inch satellite speakers and sub-woofer will comprise Boston Acoustic's next multimedia speaker system, the BA-7800, which will retail for $279 in mid-October." digitalmass

Hey all,

Yup,

<< The subwoofer uses a high-power 8" down-firing woofer in a vented enclosure >>

<< The front satellites are a 2-way design with a 3" midrange and 3/4" dome tweeter for crystal clarity and precise articulation. >>

A little late on this post, but for anyone that was wondering, the BA7800s rock. The 7500s were poor speakers and boston acoustic made a lot of improvements in the 7800s. If you are looking for a new set of speakers they would definitely be one to consider. The price tag is $249. A reasonable price for a nice speakers system. I still like my Klipsch 4.1 PM speakers a bit more, but the bostons do rock, no doubt about it.

How were the BA7500s poor? Well, $300 was too expensive, IMO. The flat-panel design was too radical for me; I want real tweeters and mid-range drivers. Their sound was also too muddy for my tastes, not crisp at all. I thought the highs were a little lacking as well.

I just listened to the Boston/Kenwood Unity System ($999) at my local Hifi-Buys. It has the same satellites and subwoofer as the BA7800, but also includes a center speaker and DVD player/amb combo. I must say it sounded good. The BA7800s should easily knock off the Klipsch 4.1s from their throne, especially if they cost $250.
