New BIOS battery?

Hi guys,

When I retired my old Socket 939 X2 4200+ rig, I gave it to my girlfriend since it has more than enough power for her needs.

Recently, the computer has been losing clock time / BIOS settings if it's left off for more than a few minutes. Unfortunately, her motherboard (ASUS A8N-SLI) doesn't boot with the memory I used (Corsair XMS DDR 400) without a voltage bump. It's a pain to open the computer up, swap in lower voltage memory, tweak the BIOS settings, insert the Corsair memory, and restart it every time the problem occurs.

Where can I buy a new battery for the motherboard? If it's something I can get at Wal-Mart, Radioshack, etc. (similar to a watch battery), what voltage should it be?

Thanks.

It's either a CR-2032 or CR-2016. They are different thicknesses. Both are 3.0+ volts, like 3.1v when new.

Yes, you should be able to get them at Walmart, or pharmacies, or probably rat shack.

So other than thickness, they're pretty much the same thing? In other words, if I was in a pinch, I could get either one to work with some bending or aluminum foil? :p

I'm considering picking up several of them, so I can replace them as I repair older computers for family members and friends. I've had at least 3 computers lately that didn't keep the proper time.

Thanks for the info.

Yup, just thickness. CR2016 is half as thick as CR2032, as CR2025 is in between. Just don't stack two CR2016 to reach the proper height, as you'd be doubling the voltage.

Coin cell batteries are an example of an item that gets seriously marked up at retail. They go for dirt-cheap online. For example, Ledshoppe has a 10-pack of CR-2032 for $5 shipped. You probably couldn't even buy 2 of these at Radio Shack for that price. And there are for sure other places that are even cheaper than Ledshoppe.

If you need it right away though, it's not worth the savings to wait to get it in the mail.

EDIT: Looks like Ledshoppe is banned here. But if you want to see a thickness comparison, remove the space between led and shoppe in the URL below and look at Photo 2:

:( it's true.

I just paid $5.50 for 1 2025 battery for my graphing calc. Was in a hurry so didn't order online.
