New beta driver doubles Oblivion FPS for HD2900XT.

The only game that matters to me gets good news and shows decent potential for the card.

Pretty interesting. This could mean that 2900XT has plenty of potential for further improvements via drivers. It's already few fps shy of GTX performance and bests 640MB GTS. If they can wrangle another 3-5 fps, it's equal to GTX, which make it much better proposition. $400 card that's equal to $550-600 card. If the drivers improvement continues and can consistently beat 640MB GTS, I'm sold on 2900XT.

Bought it 14 months ago and haven't played it yet because I bought a 24" LCD in January and now my 1900XTX won't be enough anymore.

I know once I start it, I'll play for a long time, particularly with mods. Just like I did Morrowind for 4 years.

Its niche is against the GTS, not the GTX. That will be for the XTX to tackle.

Good news. Hope they can do that across the board for all games. Would be a sweet card for $400. Also force Nvidia into action/reduce prices.

i am referring to the 'improvement' ... not so good in FEAR ... and abysmal in SS2 [edit which now that i look at it is much better with 4xsaa]
comparing it --to itself - not so much improvement as in Oblivion

...and you call 100fps choking? It's beating the Ultra as soon as you jump into AA which anyone does over 60fps.

Besides, what were the settings? What was the grass view distance? since the card has major issues with that.
The 2900xt does great if you hit the right resolution, right AA AF combo, right game settings it can then do pretty good. We still don't know if that is due to internal bottlenecks yet.

Cheapest I've found 640 gts is 360 w/o rebate of course. I don't think one should include rebates in comparison since it's not immediate. In any case, lowest 2900 xts are going for now is 420, and this is real and immediate. At that price point I think I'd tip the advantage to the gts. Although these driver improvements are very enticing.....

However the drivers won't decrease the power consumption, lower the noise level, nor increase the A-F's algorithm quality to result in one that'd be on-par with G80's.
