New Beetle>Old Beetle

Is it just the trendy thing to somehow like the old one and think the new one is worse? It's a everything the old one was then some in a nicer and more modern package. I have experience with both so i'm not biased.

nothing wrong with an air-cooled engine, as long as you know what you are doing. gotta install the tin correctly or else....

Don't forget the seals!

My air cooled bus is going on another 2500 mile trip Friday. Just did one a couple months ago.

It's watercooled, FWD, doesn't have the same lines, and wasn't designed by Hitler.

It's not just about age...I like the new Mini (and the old), hate the PT cruiser, prefer the FJ-45 to the FJ cruiser, like the new 'stang, and hate the SSR and HHR.

The one I have now is a 78: http://www.donimages.com/guac

I've actually had 4 busses in my life.

65 Deluxe (had it in high school. Sold it. Had no idea what they would be worth...)
73 high top - Too much rust and too many issues. Gave it away.
71 Deluxe - Never had an engine, so I never had time for it. Gave it away.
78 Deluxe - The Guacamole Bus!

The old one was a classic that was in production for years. It has a flat four air-cooled that mkaes an awesome sound and is full of character. they were slow, they clattered, but you could work on them at home with a regular toolkit.

New ones are just regular dull cars with a hint of the original shape.

Umm, no it's not.
In addition to all the other stuff someone mentrioned, it also lacks a rear engine I believe.
Where's the character in that?

Nice thing about my 78... No clatter. Hydraulic valves FTW! (Also, no valve adjustments at every oil change! heehee)

Bad thing is when I build my new engine, I'm going with solid lifters because the guy who designed my cam doesn't like hydraulics. 🙁 But he's the genius and his cam is what I want. Sigh.

The old one was a cheap, light, simple car, that many people could work on. The new one is none of those. The new one is all about the image.
